Hunter spends fourth day on ice floe
RESOLUTE, Nunavut, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Inclement weather grounded a rescue helicopter Monday as a Canadian hunter spent a fourth day stranded on a ice floe in the Northwest Passage, officials said.
David Idlout, 39, an experienced seal hunter, was snowmobiling Friday about nine miles from Resolute, Nunavut, when the ice broke free and began drifting.
Idleout called his wife from his satellite telephone and she alerted the coast guard, which sent a Hercules transport plane to drop him food, water, a tent, fuel, batteries and a locator beacon, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Monday.
A Cormorant helicopter was waiting for blizzard conditions to clear before attempting a rescue from the drifting floe, where temperatures were -24 F with a -40-degree wind chill factor, coast guard officials said.
