I left my house today for the first time since last Tuesday.

The city finally showed up on my street with the snowplow last night. It's been a mess up here in the San Bernardino Mountains since last Tuesday when it started snowing. Depending on who you ask, and where they are in town, we got between three and five feet of snow. Here's what it looks like today:

This is my Wife's Chevy Tahoe, parked in the neighbor's driveway because our driveway is on a very steep slope and we park there so as to have a guaranteed way out if it snows really hard. Didn't work this time.


This is my driveway, seen from in front of where the Tahoe is parked. Notice the ten foot tall mound of snow at the bottom of the driveway. That's nothing compared to what's behind it.

1. Wow! I haven't seen that much snow in decades!

3. The older locals tell me it's the worst storm we've had here in 40 years or more.

There are still large pockets of the valley without power, who haven't had power in a week. In the picture of the mound that is our Tahoe, you'll notice the power line draped over the top of it that fell during the snowfall. The electric company tells us that they MIGHT get out to it before the end of the month. They have bigger fish to fry.

4. Last year, after three storms in about two weeks, we had 36 inches, but it wasn't a big deal

because we were able to dig out before each successive storm hit.

This time it snowed for five days straight.

They're allowing only residents up the mountain at the moment, the stores are empty of food, and there is no gas up here.

5. Holy shit, Cherokee!

My 4 wheeler with a snow blade would just get lost in that. If I lived there I would put a snow blade on my 4WD pickup. Maybe that wouldn't get it either.

Note to self: Don't ever complain to Cherokee about getting snowed in.

6. Ya know... the only thing that pissed me off was having to go up on the roof every few hours

to clean off the satellite dish. I made up my mind that this spring, we're switching to CABLE!

I have a 12hp snowblower that could barely handle what was in my driveway. I cleaned it twice before the city plowed the street. We were going stir crazy!

9. Have you ever used a leaf blower to clear light snow?

It came in handy lately for clearing off the truck when it snowed every single day for a long time. But I'm not complaining. No siree, I'm happy about it. No problems here.

I have also used it to blow snow off of the truck so I could go plow, when the snow is no wet that is. I also have used a small electric snowblower on my roof when the snot starts getting to deep. The last two winters before this one were really bad ones where I live, and we had a lot of snow. The small snow blower works pretty well, along with two teenage kids and my wife with snow shovels it doesn't take to long to get rid of the snow on the roof. This year I have only plowed twice, and instead of snow we have been getting a lot of rain and warm weather.

10. Get a can of Pam

You know, the veggie oil spray with the silicone in it. Spray that dish at the beginning of next winter and consider respraying it if a big storm is forecast.

It works for me. It still cuts out when really heavy snow is falling, but it doesn't cut out as frequently as cable does in this town.

An 18 inch snowfall 3 years ago kept me snowbound for a week. I did clear the driveway but the city has no snow plows.

13. I tried the Pam thing last year. It worked okay until the snow underneath the dish

kept the snow ON it from sliding off. This year I considered getting some heated tape that people put in rain gutters, but you know... why do today what you can put off til tomorrow? I put it off til tomorrow, and suddenly... SHIT where did all this snow come from?

You'd think I lived in the mountains or something.

and forgot about all that damned snow piling up under the dish.

My own dish is mounted on the back of the house, high above anything that can collect snow, so the Pam works well.

Better yet, why not just put heat tape on the back of the thing and be done with it?

14. The power was out one evening for eight hours, but we just lit some candles, got some fresh snow

from outside, and got drunk on snow margaritas.

A few years back we got a big snow storm once a week for about 5 weeks in a row. You're right that it makes a difference to be able to dig out between storms! Still, shoveling 12-24 inches of snow every week gets wearisome! Someone in Denver snapped this shot:

I've been coming to this city since I was a small child, to play in the snow or fish, and have never seen anything like this.

I live in MS and we may see an inch of snow if we are lucky. WOW! It is quite beautiful, but I know it must be a terrible inconvenience. I bet you don't want to see anymore snow for a loooooong time.

26. We ran out of things to do (sort of) during the blizzard of '78 in Boston. Difference then

was that we were NOT ALLOWED to venture out -by car at least- by order of the National Guard. They were stationed at certain intersections in olive drab jeeps. Mass Ave down to Harvard Square was a ski path!
Only essential persons were allowed to go to work. Lots of silver got polished and sock drawers re-arranged during those days...
