They don't have to be connected to your ear. :)

The internet generally doesn't require sound (doing this makes other internet ads less intrusive too), and if you want to do something that requires sound, such as listening to music or playing games, just put the headphones on.

They risk losing users who aren't willing to put up with obnoxious audio every time they click a link. it's insulting.
