DU Tinfoilers Alert: Why Landrieu's office?
Might they have been after something specific? Any idea what it might have been? Rumors they might have heard? Anybody?

If it was a total fishing expedition, why not bug , like, a liberal's office?

And does the new US Attorney tie into this in any way?

1. The main ACORN office was in LA, and she's a LA Senator
Sounds like a fishing expedition to me.

17. CORRECTION: There's way more to this than a fishing expedition
As seen on another DU thread, one of the Teabuggers is the son of the acting U.S. Attorney for Western Louisiana. Landrieu has suggested a replacement and Obama has nominated that suggestion, Stephanie Finlay.

But David Vitter put a hold on Finlay to make sure that the U.S. Attorney in Eastern Louisiana isn't replaced by Obama.

And the Teabuggers are being prosecuted now in the Eastern district.

6. The right is still on a high from their Mass. win.
I think they were preparing find weak links in the Democratic Senate chain to take advantage of.

I'm not mocking the OP. It's a good question.

But I don't know why crazy people do things... it might be something silly like that was the office they could gain access to.

I hope we find out.

5. O'Keefe was in New Orleans giving a speech last Thursday
Edited on Tue Jan-26-10 07:17 PM by chat_noir
O'Keefe on Thursday gave a speech to the Pelican Institute for Public Policy, a libertarian group in New Orleans.

Robert Flanagan's attorney, J. Garrison Jordan, said he believes his client works for the Pelican Institute.

O'Keefe spent most of the time in the men's room off the jail's lobby, then hustled to the cab when it arrived. As he ran into the back seat, he called out, "The truth shall set me free."

7. How do we know that it's just Landrieu?
They may have been after "juicy" information on any Democrat that could potentially be replaced by a Republican.

They may have been caught on their first attempt... or tenth.

10. In a clip from Fox News one of the anchors
said they might have been trying to find a link between her and ACORN. O'Keefe is being sued by ACORN so maybe he was trying to get something that would help him in his lawsuit.

Also, they view Landrieu as a 'liberal'. You cannot be too far right for these fringe lunatics no matter how far you bend over to try to please them.

19. No
Mary was reelected in 2008, she won't be up for reelection until 2014. Vitter is running in 2010 but people with conservative values who pretend their pimps and try to tap peoples phones won't have any problem voting for a senator with conservative values who pay prostitutes to put them in diapers. Another sparkling gem of conservative values.

This was posted by Robert Flanagan, son of William Flanagan, who was caught with O'Keefe. They had some interest in what they thought was shady business around Landrieu from last November. I think they thought they could get more evidence on illegal donations or something with their bugs. The excerpt is from the Pelican Post, presumably a website run by the Pelican Institute, which is named as Flanagan's employer in today's new stories.

Watchdog Group Files Complaint Over Mysterious Landrieu Donation
Posted by Robert Flanagan on November 23, 2009
Uncategorized
The watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington has filed a complaint with the FEC over a $25,300 donation by Senator Mary Landrieu’s campaign to the U.S. Treasury.

CREW executive director Melanie Sloan argues, “We all know politicians don’t give up campaign contributions – much less $25,000 – without a very good reason. It appears Sen. Landrieu’s reason may have been to avoid a scandal or, even worse, a federal investigation into some of her contributions.”

Marc Elias, Senator Landrieu’s campaign lawyer, called the lawsuit “frivolous” and said the campaign wanted to protect the identity of donors who “may not have done anything wrong.” The CREW complaint however argues that the only two scenarios in which “dirty” money may be donated to the Treasury are if a donor is under a Justice Department investigation, or has been convicted for making illegal contributions. In both of these cases, the identity of the donor must be made public.

Sloan follows up, “Our campaign finance laws were designed to ensure transparency. If Sen. Landrieu did nothing wrong, she has no reason not to come clean with the American people and explain why she turned over $25,000 in contributions to the Treasury.”
