Is anyone familiar with how information on an inmate's crimes circulates in the prison population?

I was thinking about James O'Keefe and how he might have to face some genuine pimps in prison who might not like that he was making fun of pimps; I could imagine some of the crimes associated with pimping, like bringing prostitutes across state lines and trafficking, could put you in a federal prison along with someone trying to trespass and tap phones. But how would they find out? Do the inmates have access to that information? Do the guards leak it? I hear about how certain people get assaulted in prison because they committed certain crimes or were police officers, but how does anybody find this out?

is that they have some access to new papers and/or the internent in the library and then rumor goes from there.

4. The library has news papers and if the crime makes it on TV they get it from there

5. I work for a federal criminal defense attorney, and the answer is yes

to all of the different ways other inmates find out. But there are "security levels" in the prisons, and if O'Keefe or his buddies ever went there (which I highly doubt will happen), they'd probably be at a minimum security or camp level. Still not pretty places, but not hotbeds like the medium or high security facilities.

FWIW...unless more severe charges are added and they are found guilty of greater charges, I don't see them getting actual jail time on what they are currently charged with.

...this was a US Senator's office, i.e., a federal building. They could even be charged as terrorists.

Most likely, that won't happen... I'm just saying it could.

8. Prisoners show each other their "papers"

in order to protect themselves from being targeted as a child molester or some other offense the prison population
doesn't approve of. They often show their cellmates their papers and word of mouth takes it from there.
