John and Elizabeth Edwards are now legally separated

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

ABC News has confirmed former presidential candidate John Edwards and his wife Elizabeth are legally separated.

Last week, John Edwards admitted to fathering the child of former campaign worker Rielle Hunter.

ABC News reports John Edwards is no longer living in the family's Chapel Hill North Carolina home.

Under North Carolina law, the couple cannot divorce until they've been separated for one year.

I mean, I never liked or trusted Edwards, but to watch it all unravel like this is sad.

29. It really is. I always hope it can be worked out.
I certainly understand why it can't, but she has struggled so much. I hope she finds some sort of peace.

3. BFD. They are private citizens.
What people SHOULD be concerned with is the likely legal separation of Barack Obama and the American voters come 2012.

31. Absolutely correct.
When Republican politicians get caught with their penises where they don't belong, they call it a "private family matter." That is what this is.

26. He might "have" to marry her if he doesn't want continuous stories
Edited on Wed Jan-27-10 07:37 PM by karynnj
that will plague him for ever. (You can't say they will destroy his credibility as none remains.)

That might, in the end be just punishment for both, as I can't imagine that she would be pleasant living with an John Edwards, with no future potential. I hestitate to use the allusion - but it reminds me of the conclusion of Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton, which I had to read in high school - only in their case, they are crippled inside, not physically. I would imagine that she will become the symbol to Edwards of all he through away.

It is really hard to think of all Edwards threw away because he came to believe his press clippings. Imagine he would have had the humility to be thankful given the opportunity to be on the 2004 ticket, recognized that Kerry obviously knew more than he did and acted as a team player, doing what the campaign wanted, studied his heart out before the debate, and campaigned with the same energy as he did in the primaries. he could possibly be a VP or an ex-VP, who would have learned a huge amount from Kerry and others. (Not saying he caused the loss, but imagine he had contributed more.)

Or imagine that on that awful day in November, he realized what Elizabeth meant to him and really worked to support her, putting aside anything else until she and the family no longer needed that. He was young and that would have been the right priorities. He knew from 2004 how tough running again could be on his young family. That would have putting ego aside.

Now, here's a song that almost fits: http://popup.lala.com/popup/432627073616213858

I hope Elizabeth finds the comfort of her family, friends and people who have known her through the years. This had to be really tough as in the wake of the confession, it was reported that it was for the kids especially in teh light of her health that she was staying with him. I hope this might mean that her medical outlook is somewhat better, rather than the fact that JRE has simply gone too far.

35. Apparently many care.
Many were rooting on this guy for the WH. Many were very hurt by the devastating news of her breast cancer. Many felt pain for them for the loss of their child. Many were pissed off that he would risk his political career like this, and with that, the possible risk of losing the WH because of this. Many care. You should have written "I don't care".

23. Shame on them both - ambitious selfish people
They jeopardized everything for the Dems when he continued to run after getting caught. And she is just as bad as him - just as selfish, and ambitious. There is a terrible portrait of both of them in the new 2008 campaign books.

And I feel like a fool, I really believed his schtick.

41. She really would have been better
She knew the issues better and was much sharper. However, she also had no compunctions about lying about Obama's healthcare plan on the eve of the Iowa caucuses - saying that with her pre-existing conditions, she wouldn't be covered.

Here is a tiny clip though that shows how good she could be in making solid points, in the beginning here, I think her response is actually more pertinent than the responses of either John or Teresa Kerry (who are my favorite politician and spouse ever). What is eerie though is Teresa's excellent comment later on the role of a good spouse. At the time no one would know that it was something Elizabeth should have taken to heart and internalized.

What was she supposed to do? I mean really? She is a human, and I can't even begin to imagine what she was going through on top of everything else. Blame her too though if it makes you feel better. He did this. Not her.

45. Yes, there is a separation period.
One good aspect of it is that better decisions can come out of settlements and child custody issues because more time is put into it. NC is a no fault divorce state so it probably helps children involved in figuring out the best arrangements.
