American Idol May Be A Silly, Goofy Show
But last night and the night before, they done good. Introduced millions of people, who never think about it, to the devastating hardship of others and raised a lot of money. And that Elvis hologram was a trip.

Just saying.

3. I can tell you you're right
My sister, who is a nurse and should be better educated, had no idea that AIDS was: 1.) so bad in Africa, and 2.) that so many children were orphans. Because she's a loyal AI viewer, she now knows all of this, and is giving the organization $200.

5. Idled
I find American Idol insipid and avoid anything Fox. I groaned when my daughter turned it on last night, and "insipid" it was not. What a great and informative program, I know that many of those stars have been working on poverty particularly with children, raising awayness in this area. It was amazing and certainly a positive shift. Other countries get their information about the desperate plight of families throughout the world, we get our from entertainers, but however we get it, we all need to know.

I remember Jimmy Carter saying that the odd thing about the Scandinavia countries is politicians campaign on which politicians will give the most governmental money to underdeveloped countries and the poor around the world and our politics is how much money can a politician raise for themselves or their party.

Thanks "ME" for bringing the program up because you are so right, it was outstanding and inspiring

6. You're Welcome
And if you're like me and felt pulled to watch the Moyers show, the great thing is that it's being repeated. In the New York area it will be on Saturday afternoon, 1:30pm.

7. The Elvis hologram seemed tasteless to me
Edited on Thu Apr-26-07 10:25 AM by Marnieworld
Immediately I remembered how Lisa Marie sold the rights away and now we have to see these things. I never liked the use of dead celebrities in contexts that weren't there own choosing. Usually the immediate family doesn't let it happen but once it's a corporation owned entity?

I dunno. I guess it's nice to see him or anyone again who was liked. Yet somehow it just doesn't feel right to me.

On edit: I was especially happy when they emphasized New Orleans. Not to diminish other countries tremendous struggles, but I really was hoping that the American Idol would show American stories. That and Applaichia children broke my heart. I had no idea how bad it was in East Kentucky. How can one are in America be so different than another? If you are lucky to be born in a middle class are you get to read and a chance to have a life. If you were unlucky to be born there you just have to be screwed? In the same country? This makes no sense to me at all. I know that we are a collection of States but as a Union we shouldn't tolerate this system. It should be equal without respect to income.

How many bombs have we bought and detonated that could have taught these children, re-built these cities, and fed these people? iT shouldn't take a big budget telethon to solve these problems. In the same moment I am inspired and disgusted.

11. Good Point
I didn't even think about the sell-out aspect of the Elvis bit, I was just so fascinated by the technical side and how well it was done, that it was so three dimensional.

I was amazed at the kids. Yes, their stories were being exploited for television, but so many Americans don't have a clue and last night they were given a peek into the devastation of so many little lives and how terribly difficult life can be for so many wonderful children. The little girl who smilingly told us she liked to dance, mentioned her mother had three jobs, then broke down, was heartbreaking. As were all the children, in Appalachia, NO and Africa.

None of like Faux, and they play/played a huge role in promoting the careers of the very people who would kick these children to the curb. But in these sorry times, I'll take any good where I can find it. The irony of the two nights wasn't lost on me.
