Sherrod Brown and the Ohio State Buckeyes are about the only thing

Ohio has to be proud of lately. Well, Eric Fingerhutt doing a great job of advocating for increased Higher Education accessibility but not everyone knows about that...

Of course there is DK and Betty Sutton but not everyone knows about them. I'm talking statewide baby, statewide.

Sen. Brown was great on the Maddow show tonight and spelled out his level of frustration with the obstructionist Republican Party.

I do pretty much love my two lady Senators, but Sherrod is one cool dude.

He not only talks the talk, but he walks the walk... You are lucky to have him!

I haven't heard about anybody working on Higher Education Accessibility out here, now that I think of it...

We could sure use that. The State Universities and the University of California are really hurting, and so are their students.

4. As a Resident of Ohio Governor Strickland & US Senate Candidate Jennifer Brunner are...

I believe that Governor Strickland has done the best for the buckeye state given the circumstances of the current economic situation. He is up for re election and I dont know of any serious opponent, he looks to be a shoe in for re election. Also I cannot stress enough the importance of the US Senate race in Ohio, current SOS Jennifer Brunner is likely to be the Democratic candidate to challenge retiring Senator Mike Dewines seat, I think we have a unique opportunity here and I ask all to go to http://jenniferbrunner.com/ and donate to this terrific candidate. I have met her personally during the race for SOS in which she beat a famous Republican and she is down to earth. Also I did an interview with her for school about the questions regarding election fraud in the 2004 election in Ohio and she promised that as SOS we would never have to worry about election fraud and she was gonna make it so voting was more accessible to minorities and youth which she has done by enacting early voting in Ohio!

12. Corey, you're young and enthusiastic about your candidate, and that's great,

but...you have to make sure you get your facts straight or it will be easy for people who want to to dismiss you. So please remember from now on--it's Voinovich who's the retiring senator, not DeWine. DeWine lost his seat to Sherrod Brown.

If you keep running around saying Jennifer Brunner has a great chance to win DeWine's vacated seat, a lot of Ohioans are gonna look at you and say "DeWine?? What the hell??" Then they won't listen to the rest of what you have to say.

So, make sure you keep their ears open and receptive to your message...remember Brunner is running for Voinovich's vacant seat.

And go Jennifer!

Strickland does not have a serious opponent?!?! He is behind in polls by 7-9 points to John Kasich! I would call that a serious opponent. Brunner and Lee Fisher are battling in the primary to go against Rob Portman in the general. Both are down in polls to Portman. It is still a red state, and the current economic situation is making it more so.

Brunner did not make the state democratic party happy by running either-she is the incumbent Secretary of State, and redistricting will happen based on 2010 election results. The party with control of 2/3 out of Governor, Secretary of State, and Auditor gets to draw the lines. SOS should have been a slam dunk with Brunner, but she is not running for reelection and it is a dogfight now. If Strickland and Brunner/Fisher lose Ohio will be redrawn by Republicans.

redrawing pad...

Believe you me I was really surprised when Brunner decided to give up her seat. A lot of people worked long and hard to get her elected in order to have that seat at the table.

The problem is Lee Fisher. He feels entitiled to this seat. He has lost twice in off year state-wide elections and I think he will loose against Portman., I think Brunner has a better chance against Portman because she isn't from Cuyahoga County and has a base in Franklin.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought each party automatically got to select a member to sit at the table? That is why I said 2 out of 3 instead of 3 out of 5-each party automatically gets one seat. Is that right?

It must have been a Freudian slip because she forgot to introduce me when I was running for the state senate when she came in for a anti-NAFTA talk. I was pretty miffed since I had just had an Anti-NAFTA Op-Ed punished by the Plain Dealer and I had called her office and talked to an aide about it. She introduced everyone but me. It would have been a nice little shout out that would havve helped me in the heart of my home base.

13. I May Be Biased

I might be biased because Sherrod Brown is my Senator, and my Dad used to work with his Mom, but he's probably my favorite politician in Washington right now. And while polls show the Republicans doing pretty well here in January, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that we will have another Democratic Senator from Ohio (whether it's Jennifer Brunner or Lee Fisher--I think either one of them will wipe the floor with this tool Portman). The fact of the matter is that people responding to polls right now don't know anything about any of the candidates yet, and they're responding based on the letter after their names (R or D). I think once the campaign season heats up, and people start getting some actual information on what the candidates actually stand for, you'll see Portman take a nose-dive.

The one race that has me worried is the Governor's race. Again, I think Kasich is doing nothing more than riding the wave of "we hate the economy" sentiment from Ohioans right now, but I do think he has a chance to win. Strickland needs to do a good job of letting people know that our current economic struggles are NOT the result of HIS policies, but are nothing more than the direct result of Republican mismanagement for the past 20 years (but specifically the last 8). If he doesn't do a good job of getting that message across, people are going to vote in record numbers for the Pied Piper who shows up touting a message of "no State income tax." The benefit of Kasich being a media member is that all his various gaffes are out there to be sampled and played over and over in TV ads. I just hope Strickland has a savvy enough campaign that all the stupid, hateful things Kasich has said over the years can be found, isolated, and publicized.

But back to the point of the post, every time I see Sherrod Brown, the more I like him. I even wonder if his running for President someday might become a possibility. He's certainly young enough that he can bide his time until the right moment. I just wonder if there's anything out there that will kill his chances of making a successful run (I don't know enough about him to answer that question).
