For my friends here on DU, Please - a request for prayers/good thoughts for a fellow DU'er

[The Straight Story]

One of our own is going through some hard times. His mom is dying of cancer, not much time left.

She is going to be staying at a hospice:

You may not always agree with him on things, we often don't agree with one another here, but I ask tonight you put aside your personal issues.

He will be leaving his family, traveling thousands of miles away from his wife and kids, to be with his mom as she passes.

DU'er Bonobo. Someone I have come to call a friend over time, we have chatted many times on many things - we don't always agree with one another, and I am sure you might not agree with him either at times. Such is life.

But the next few weeks will be really hard for him. I hope, if you have any differences with him, you can just put those aside and send some good thoughts his way.

When the chips are down I know we come together, and I hope we can again tonight for him. And tonight is just the start, he will have a rough few weeks ahead.

I have his permission to post this, he is rather upset tonight and I asked him if I could post something to maybe lift his spirits before he flies back here to US.

So if you can, let him know he is not alone.

It sounds like we both lost ours around the same time.
My Momma passed away on Jan 21st, in a hospice center. I was there.
She was 86 and lived with me for the past 10 years.

I don't know whether you believe she's gone, or whether she's still with you in a form you can't see (personally, I believe the latter, but it still must hurt like hell), but I am so sorry. Ten years. You did a good, good, good thing--and whether or not you feel as though it was more for you than for her... she must have been so proud of, and so grateful for, you and your love. As a mom I can tell you that if either of my children were willing to take care of me for ten years, my heart would be ready to burst with love and gratitude and pride.

I do that now with my beloved mother. My family has a great time talking about the time with her and I add things I knew when I was growing up. It's a great way of remembering, but not in constant sorrow. We remember her for her joy of life, her caring of family members, her love, her caring.

I won't say "I know how you feel" because we each experience things differently, but I do empathize and can only advise you to be as strong as you can right now, and afterwards -- don't even try to. Let yourself grieve, you have to go through it to get through it and to the place where you can smile at memories of her instead of them making you want to cry.

Dear Bonobo,

So sorry to hear about your Mom. The hospice folks will be very kind and gentle to both your
Mom and to you. When a loved one is in pain and nearing time to pass on, hospice can make that
time less painful and also a chance for you to be with your Mom without her suffering.

My mother passed away at a hospice last week. I am just now crawling out of my hole a bit.
Just getting back to using computer, venturing out of house, taking care of personal matters.

Hospice is a place where everyone and everything is intended to relieve suffering and relieve
anxiety of both the patient and the family.

The people, nurses, social worker, everyone there are angels of kindness.

I am sorry for anyone going through the loss of a loved one, especially
when there is pain like with cancer.

Once my Momma was moved to hospice, they took away her pain. I am grateful to them for that.
I stayed with Momma around the clock day by day. I was lucky to be able to do that.

Take care. You can only do the best that you can, and your Momma will appreciate you being
there with her, whether she is able to tell you that or not.

I lost my mother to cancer in March, 2001. She was 79 yrs old, and had no pain, thankfully. She went quickly, there was no hospice, but the pain of the loss is still there.

You will not feel it right away, but as time goes by, you will remember her more and more, and those memories will bring you tears, but be thankful that you had her. There is only ONE.

167. I found out last month how painful it is to lose a parent.

My Dad died at age 88. I knew it was coming so I tried to grieve ahead of time. Didn't work. I'm still numb and can't believe he's gone. I cannot believe the depths of my grief.
