NPR skewers Howard Zinn in Remembrance
During All Things Considered, NPR offered a remembrance of Howard Zinn. About two-thirds through the piece, David Horowitz was brought on to say effectively that there is nothing of academic value in Howard Zinn's work.

Horowitz is at 2:39 in the Historian Howard Zinn Remembered segment.

Yeah, NPR!

9. I heard this on air
When the "but...." part started I didn't recognize the voice. Then they said Horowitz.

Then I just rolled my eyes.

There was no reason to have him on or anyone else. You don't think the people at NPR haven't read Zinn?? they are the prime market.

Zinn was great. Love the sigline quote. He should be in every high school, at least in the library.

17. So, who did they put on to diss J.D. Salinger? Wasn't that part of the All Things Considered
program, too?

On my local NPR station they did a promo for the Zinn and Salinger "rememberances" that were supposed to be coming up in the next hour of "All Things Considered". However, my local Public Radio station pre-empted that hour with a re-broadcast of Obama's SOTU speech, so I couldn't hear what NPR broadcast about Zinn and Salinger.

How utterly disgusting that they gave that irredeemable asshole Horowitz ANY air time EVER. And a thousand times worse that they gave him air time to piss on Zinn's grave!

38. My comment to NPR:
I am a big fan of NPR and the way you handle news. But to have David Horowitz comment on Howard Zinn was insulting to all thinking people and especially to Howard Zinn's memory. Horowitz, as of late has been making a career of dumbing down higher education. He has the intellect of a Jerry Springer viewer and the morals of a Jerry Springer guest.
It is possible to find a contrary view to Professor Zinn's without scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Regards,

41. Non-fucking-sense. NPR has dedicated numerous airtime today to exploring the career of Howard Zinn.
For crying out loud, they put one of his most ardent admirer's and colleagues on for several fucking hours to praise, reflect, and talk about this great man's wonderful career.

They allowed Horowitz a few minutes.

Now, had this been a Right-wing academic of long-standing, and FOX News had done what NPR has done with Zinn - namely, hours of praise versus a few feeble minutes of timid criticism - you would be up in arms the other direction.

Intellectual honesty really is the hallmark of a progressive, liberal frame of mind, yah know it?

And this OP ain't it.

Could you please elaborate on the intellectual dishonesty as evidenced above in my post? In fact, what do you actually mean by intellectual dishonesty? In the context of the above link which is effectively to an obituary, NPR's "balancing" of this news item is very poor journalism. It is exactly Fox-News-quality journalism.

So, if you truly don't believe that adding "balance" to an obituary is poor form, why not post your name and address online here so that those who would care to do so might have the opportunity to write an opposing commentary for your obituary. Someday, when the inevitable happens, your family could then include said comments in the newspaper or perhaps they could be read aloud at your service.

I believe that - if you think of it in this way - you will understand why NPR's action is reprehensible.

P.S. "Numerous airtime" is a very unusual way of expressing any of the following ideas: copious amounts of airtime, a large amount of airtime, scads of airtime, giant honking globules of airtime, hours of airtime, Tera-micro-seconds of airtime, et cetera.

and I'm certain there are other recent examples if one searches...

IMO, there is a huge difference between having an opposing voice on with the smallest bit of common decency, i.e., "...I didn't agree with Zinn on anything, but he was a worthy adversary in our battles, and the nation has suffered a great loss..." versus outright grave-pissing like "...Zinn was a worthless shit who never did anything in his life and we're all better off without him..."

NPR unequivocally crossed the line..

56. NPR Ombudsman: NPR should have more people like Glenn Beck
http://www.npr.org/ombudsman/2009/11/glenn_beck_and_me.html
I appeared on WAMU's The Kojo Nnamdi Show in Washington, DC on Oct. 20. Thirty minutes later I got this response:

"I was outraged by your comment today on the Kojo Nnamdi program that NPR should have more people like Glenn Beck who represent a certain point of view not heard on NPR," wrote Stefanie Weldon, of Silver Spring, MD. "The reason he isn't heard on NPR is because, like Holocaust deniers, flat-earthers and Creation Science proponents, NPR used to understand that not all points of view deserve airing. You apparently disagree and think racism, sexism and mendacity have a place at NPR. Until you convince me otherwise, not one penny of my money will go to pay your salary -- I guess that means not one penny of my money will go to NPR."...

"I've said it before, and I will reiterate it. NPR is a mainstream news outlet." November 2, 2009 - Ombudsman's Blog

" War continued his education. Eager to help wipe out the Nazis, Zinn joined the Army Air Corps in 1943 and even persuaded the local draft board to let him mail his own induction notice. He flew missions throughout Europe, receiving an Air Medal, but he found himself questioning what it all meant. Back home, he gathered his medals and papers, put them in a folder and wrote on top: "Never again."

He attended New York University and Columbia University, where he received a doctorate in history. In 1956, he was offered the chairmanship of the history and social sciences department at Spelman College, an all-black women's school in then-segregated Atlanta.

During the civil rights movement, Zinn encouraged his students to request books from the segregated public libraries and helped coordinate sit-ins at downtown cafeterias. Zinn also published several articles, including a then-rare attack on the Kennedy administration for being too slow to protect blacks.

He was loved by students — among them a young Alice Walker"

68. NPR = Not Possibly Relevant
No doubt, Whore-owitz was brought on for NPR's silly and debased version of "balance". Prof. Zinn actually practiced what he preached and wasn't some pro-establishment hack or corporate whore.

NPR sucks.

69. NPR is becoming a right-wing POS. Bringing on Horowitz just proves it.
I was listening to NPR as it ridiculed the Danish for being happy with their high taxes, proclaiming that all the "geniuses" leave. Really? I had no idea mathematicians and physicists would be so motivated by tax breaks for the rich. :eyes:

That's the final straw for me.

81. Anything can be clubbed into their overbearing libertarian narrative
They have the same opinion of their audience as fox does: 'All we like sheep.'

74. I heard that when I was driving
And just about crashed my van. To hear that miserable repuke asswipe David Horrorwitz even speaking about Howard Zinn made my blood boil, and made me wonder even more what has been going through NPR's heads lately.

It's not just me who thinks they have taken a right turn over the last few years, evidently.

76. They should bring in young David Horowitz to kick old David's ass for being a sellout.
Must have been bad weed or starvation.

79. Zinn had more integrity and achievement in one tiny skin molecule in his little finger
Then David Horowitz will ever have in his entire life and career. What a disgrace NPR is to allow that bloviating, opportunistic right wing creep of a nomad to comment on Howard Zinn
:puke:
I guess in the interests of balance, when Horowitz dies, they'll allow someone like Michael Moore to give a commentary on how little value Horowitz's entire life and career was to this world. Nah, didn't think so

80. Very Disappointing
Please let NPR know that you are displeased. Click on the poster's link. You can post a comment at NPR.
At the same time, in NPR's defense, I listened to MSM and heard NO report regarding Howard Zinn.
