A word for you from Howard Zinn,
"To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness.

What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places—and there are so many—where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction.

And if we do act, in however small a way, we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory."

— Howard Zinn

12. He witnessed so much inhumanity over the course of his long life
but remained hopeful and determined- a force of light in the darkness.

A great loss. Yet his words remain with us.

He was someone I read faithfully and a man of such empathy and compassion for all human beings. He will be greatly missed.

23. "To live as a human being . . . is a victory."
Words to live by, and remember when things are difficult and those around us want to deny us of the choice to be human.

You were my favorite college professor, Howard. I love you in the best meaning of the word.

34. My student asked me if I wailed at his passing.
Edited on Fri Jan-29-10 07:36 PM by cachukis
I asked him how he knew Zinn. He told me his father was a fan and he knew that I had to be by my lessons. I told him that Zinn's lessons would not be lost. He had to spread the word about "The Peoples." He said he picked up his father's copy and began reading last night.
I felt good.
