He has been able to find millions to reopen previously shuttered interstate rest stops, but nonessentials like health care and education are subject to cuts (because, as we all know, increasing taxes to raise revenue is immoral).

Gov. Bob McDonnell said today that he will make cuts in health care, education and the Virginia Retirement System to help bring the state’s budget into balance.

Appearing for the first time on the “Ask the Governor” radio show on WRVA, McDonnell said he has been talking with legislators about where to cut, but he gave no details.

McDonnell must make $4 billion in budget cuts to balance the budget for the 2010-2012 budget.

Former Gov. Timothy M. Kaine proposed $2.3 billion in cuts, plus an increase in the state income tax that McDonnell and the House of Delegates have rejected.

6. ROFL. All of Virginia's Governor's are one term.

In our state the Governor and Lieutenant Governor are elected every four years in separate elections, and the Governor is restricted to one term. HOWEVER, a former Governor may run for re-election so long as it is not consecutive with his last term. This one term limit does not apply to the Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General.

I happen to like this system, and would love to see the President of the United States restricted to one term of six years.

5. The rest areas are crucial, believe it or not

Virginia has very few truck stops on most of its roads--I-81 and I-95 are the two exceptions. If you're running I-64 there is one, on I-77 there are three, there's one on I-85, a couple on US 29, a couple on US 58...

Without truck stops or rest areas, and with the hours of service regs the way they are, drivers have two basic choices when it comes time to take their 10-hour breaks: offramps and Walmart parking lots.

What he NEEDS to do is to man up and raise taxes. Fucking Republicans. The thing is, if he would go to the people and tell them "we have to raise taxes for your children" they would go along with it.

7. Absolutely.

Even for those who were not truck drivers, some of the rest stops that were closed were in areas where they needed them. To give a personal story, when I go north out of state, I typically try to avoid DC and its traffic hell. This will take you into some pretty rural areas. I was traveling home from upstate New York a few months back, and I saw someone having to take a piss on the side of the road, the rest stop had been closed, and we were in a pretty rural area - not really a place to go to the bathroom in site.

Mother nature doesn't wait for the nearest gas station. When you gotta go, you gotta go. :P

I really wish they'd put one of those high speed rails here in Virginia, from Richmond to DC, and from DC all along the major spots further up north.
