Jim Webb: GOP mole?
Check out this piece over at TPM. Sounds like a piece of work.

No offense to Virginians, but does this guy really represent the mainstream views of the Democratic Party?

1. So far I find Jim Webb fairly disappointing.
He sounds like he has his own agenda. Webb may be a Democrat we want to target with someone more Progressive.

7. I said more progressive,
not necessarily someone of Dennis Kucinich's stature.

Simply replace him with someone more progressive and plugged into the struggles of everday people.

DLC/Third Way, yes.

We've been infiltrated by conservatives too cowardly to stay Republicans.

3. Webb is a sexist asshole.
Even Reagan said the Navy was happy to see him leave.

5. Webb switched parties
so he is a former Republican but I doubt he is spying for the GOP. They have other more effective methods at their disposal, I would guess. Not from Virginia but I find myself agreeing more often than disagreeing with Webb so my opinion of him is still mostly positive. His opposition to HCR is a sticking point, on the other hand no one is particularly happy with the bill as it stands today.

6. You *do* realize that Virginia's choices were Jim Webb or Macacca Allen?
You *do* realize that, were it not for Macacca, Allen would have been senator and quite possibly the president (he was the GOP favorite, with McCain a second-third-fourth-fifth choice behind him).

9. +1. Webb is doing nice work in prison reform. Webb is a million
times better than Allen and isn't a mole. He's closer to Obama in his desire to work together with the opposition.

14. I remember well
The pukes and the press were trying to stuff macacca down our throats up to his moment of stupid.

8. I liked his book
I don't see that much disparity between what he is saying in this article and what the president said in his SOTU speech.

I think this is a case of knee-jerk DUers making a mountain out of a molehill.

12. Which one? He's written several. (And Fields of Fire is by FAR the best ...
depiction of VietNam from a grunt's perspective.)

20. I meant "A Time To Fight"
Edited on Fri Jan-29-10 04:39 PM by Zomby Woof
I have not read 'Fields of Fire' but understand it is one of the best, if not the best, in that genre.

Of course, I have vehemently disagreed with Webb on his Patriot Act, wiretapping votes, etc, along those lines, but on domestic issues regarding the economy, labor, and as previously mentioned, prison reform, I am happy to have him in our ranks. We always say we want Democrats not to be wimps, and here is our chance. He actually came from a background of New Deal Democrats/labor/military, and is candid in "A Time to Fight" on his journey from being a professional member of the USMC, to professional civilian in the military, including working for a Republican admin - and making the journey back to his roots in the Democratic party. His labor creds are solid, and that is a major issue with me.

Or to borrow from Bill Clinton: strength and wisdom are not opposing values.

22. We agree. And on the "not a wimp" front, Jim wears a Navy Cross, and ...
the only reason it was not a Congressional Medal of Honor is that he survived his wounds.

I don't always agree with him, and when I don't I tell him so, but your insinuation is asinine.

13. He's not a mole because he never pretended to be anything other than what he is:
a Born Again Democrat who was sickened by the Bushies but still holds a conservative ideology. We VA Democrats knew we were getting a Blue Dog, actually very Purple at heart. That's okay - he sure beats the hell out of the disgusting GOP goon, George "Macaca" Allen, who he replaced.

15. I'm mad at Senate Dems..
For tossing the public option aside so quickly and bogging down the bill with special interest bs. Without the po health reform is pretty ineffective. I know conservatives who support it.

16. If you think he's a Republican fine, but as long as he votes with Dems he's OK with me.
Because as a person who does not live in Virginia the only interest I have in him is if he can generally be relied on to vote with the Democratic bloc, if so then he's fine with me.

he's a far cry better than the GOP. Besides, he's for marriage equality.

19. as a Virginian, no offense to you
but do you really represent the mainstream of the Democratic Party?

Webb is pretty close to the mainstream voter (including both Democrats and Independents, since you can't get elected with just Democratic support) in Viriginia.

If defeated a more progressive candidate in the primary, one who, even with his Macaca moment, would have lost to Allen.

being a senator must be the most spiritually draining job in the world--or something.
