I'm not trying to defend that Alito guy, but I would like some perspective on whether what Obama did was an exceptional thing or not.

Having a president criticize a SCOTUS ruling not long after it is released doesn't happen every day, but it isn't unusual either. The fact that criticism of a particular decision hasn't typically been voiced at the SOTU may have more to do with the timing of the decisions than with some sense of protocol. If the decision comes out in Oct, Nov or December, and its worthy of comment, it probably would be commented on before the SOTU. If it came out after the SOTU, it probably wouldn't be commented on again in the next SOTU months and months later.
