CALGARY (Dow Jones)--TransCanada Corp. (TRP) and ExxonMobil Corp. (XOM) filed their plans with regulators Friday to build a natural-gas pipeline in Alaska, moving a step closer to bringing a major new source of gas to market.
TransCanada and Exxon also said the cost of constructing the pipeline projects had increased by billions of dollars, and that they would reduce customer tariffs in order to better compete with a rival Alaska gas pipeline proposed by BP PLC (BP) and ConocoPhillips (COP).
TransCanada and Exxon asked the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to approve two potential Alaska gas pipelines, one that would carry gas overland into Canada, and one that would bring it to a port in southern Alaska. TransCanada and Exxon only plan to build one pipeline, choosing based on which gets the most interest from potential customers.
The first option is a 1,700-mile pipeline from Prudhoe Bay into the Canadian province of Alberta, which would connect with TransCanada's existing pipeline system that carries gas into the U.S.

I love how obviously gushing (pun intended) with praise for the oil cabals this WSJ article is. "One step closer to a major new source of gas for the market."
