I work in the aerospace/defense industry.
Got a company e-mail today. E2-C Hawkeye aircraft are (and have been) flying into Haiti from Guantanamo Naval Air station in Cuba. They are carrying food, water, medical supplies and medical personnel to help in the relief efforts.
These aircraft are flying as many as 18 turnaround (round-trip) missions per day. That's a heavy and fatiguing load on the air and ground crews.
Now, I just know some paranoid asshats are going to claim this is a cover for spying on/bombing Haiti or somesuch bullshit. The E2-C is a very specialized aircraft, normally used for surveillance.
But in this case I'm inclined to believe it is a purely humanitarian effort. The Hawkeyes are the aircraft available, and are being used as jury-rigged cargo planes to try and help people in need.
