Roeder jury foreman: Abortion not jurors' concern in verdict

In some people's minds, the abortion issue is forever entwined with Scott Roeder's killing of George Tiller.

But abortion never came up in jurors' brief deliberations Friday at the end of Roeder's trial, the jury foreman said in an interview Saturday with The Eagle.

"It was never spoken of," said the 54-year-old, whose first service as a juror came in a trial that drew reporters and activists on both sides of the abortion issue from coast to coast.

He said the jury discussed only the question of whether Roeder was guilty of first-degree murder for shooting Tiller while Tiller served as an usher in his Wichita church, and whether Roeder was guilty of aggravated assault for pointing a handgun at two people who tried to block his escape.

Because of security concerns, the juror asked that his name not be used. He said he didn't want to take any chances that someone might lash out against him.

10. Most likely

Roeder was unemployed yet managed to drive down to Wichita multiple times (it's a 3 hour drive) and stayed in nice hotels while he was there. He was present in the courtroom throughout Tiller's trial in March and made two trips to Wichita in the week before he killed Tiller May 31. He also bought a gun.

When he was arrested he had $10 and an old car. He got a public defender (paid for with my tax dollars, BTW).

The cell phone number of the Operation Rescue Communications Director was in Roeder's car when he was arrested.

The Operation Rescue folks and several other prominent forced birthers from the state and across the country were in the courtroom for Roeder's trial. They have been writing him letters and visiting him since he has been in jail and they have given him money to help make his stay more pleasant.

You don't need to leap to any conclusions to see a conspiracy here.

Those people are even bigger crackpots than Operation Rescue. I didn't hear about Phelps and his crowd at the trail, or did I miss something?

14. I don't know if Phelps wasn't there or was just ignored by the media

Our local media here does a great job of ignoring Phelps. And since he is just an attention hound, this is the best strategy for dealing with him. In fact, I see more about Phelps here and on other internet sites than I see in our local media. We also saw an increase in his national media presence when the locals figured out that ignoring him was the best way to 'fight' his hate. That's about the time he started taking his show on the road. And he rarely makes appearances here in Kansas anymore. :)

Two stories ~ 1. Recently Phelps and his crew picketed a high school in my city for putting on a play that offended them. Sorry don't remember the play. But the kids at the high school organized a HUGE rally that was all over the local TV stations and the paper. But there were NO pictures of Phelps or his crew and their signs. Every image was of these kids and their counter rally. It was awesome.

2. My kid came home one day a couple years ago and told me Phelps was at the church on the corner up the street protesting some funeral. But there was NO media. And the funeral procession just drove on by like he wasn't even there.

That's how you counter Phelps. But it took us quite awhile to learn this lesson.

12. I am glad the verdict was reached so quickly since there was nothing to debate.

I feel sorry for the jurors. I would have done anything to stay off that jury with all the nutcases out there. I stayed clear away from downtown Wichita during the whole trial. Those crazy freaks were out in full force.
