Reacting to negative replies...
Double check your original post for any thing that could be misunderstood, check the response again and then think about it. Is a misunderstood phrase, a difference in opinions, or something else? Remember if they don't get your sense of humor the first time it's unlikely that another dose will remedy that.

Above all please don't little, or demean, someone who took the time to response to you when we all are posting in the hopes that some one will.

Unless you are just flame-bait, in which case have fun with that.

1. Yeah, "Fuck you, asshole" doesn't usually lead to a further exchange of ideas.
(But it CAN be strangely uplifting when it's well deserved.)

3. In defense of a good GFY now and then
I can only recall one time telling a poster to Go Fuck Yourself (GFY) and indeed it was uplifting.

In defense of the practice I will say this. At some point all the of legitimate arguments have been made and a decision has to follow. If, after careful review of all available evidence it is clear that the poster is just some jerk poser or someone so deranged that no presentation of fact will sway them - well, then its time to Go fuck Yourself. See what I mean?

15. Personally, I prefer
using thinly veiled sarcasm...

but GFY certainly can come in handy at times.

9. But very often ...
the response is simply a reaction from someone who has not taken the time to read the post, who has not read any links attached, or is merely flinging flame-bait themselves... rudely not responding to what one has just posted with a simple "I disagree" and stating why but rather angrily proclaiming their own, often unrelated, viewpoint. Frequently, the word "corporatist" is thrown in as an intensifier (or better yet, "Rahm Emmanuel"), as if some weight suddenly accrued to what is otherwise a non-response.

So don't always blame the OP -- the responders are equally at fault. Sometimes a negative reply is ... actually a negative reply.

10. Exactly, and I've been known to sweetly suggest
they read beyond the topic line because I've answered the angry post in the body of mine.

However, if they have a long history of being gratuitously abusive jerks, I just click ignore and move on.

Most of my ignore list is no longer with us. May they rest in pieces.

12. Sorry didn't intend to come across as blaming anyone.
Any of what you state can and does happen.

Best response for lack of reading or knee-jerk reactions would be to point out the relevant sections of your post. Some one stating unrelated viewpoint can be asked why they feel that that is superior. And personally its OK to say that this is my opinion, feel free to try to talk me out of it.

And your last sentence make me simile, actually a negative reply is always a negative reply-its just that sometimes its not as negative as you think and sometimes it doesn't have to stay negative.

21. ain't that just the truth.
You forgot they use the words "troll" "paid shill" "plant" "freep", say you use "RW talking points", distort what you said, or even say cute little things like calling one a pedophile or pervert just because they disagree with you. Charming, yes?

I often reply with just facts and links without commentary just to avoid being criticized for what I say. Doesn't help much. They'll find some reason to reject those facts just 'cause they don't like 'em.

I would also say pick your battles. In addition, sometimes folks are out looking to troll or merely for conflict. I'm absolutely sure some create accounts here with malicious intent to do what they may to sow discord. Some people are actually paid to "manage" and/or "seed viral assets" in online communities.
