San Diego selling police horses

Sunday, January 31, 2010

(01-31) 10:31 PST San Diego, CA (AP) --

The city of San Diego says it will sell its seven police horses via an online auction as a way to help balance its budget.

The horse unit, started in 1983, is disbanding, and the officers have been assigned to other units.

About a third of the San Diego Police Department's dogs are also being laid off.

The horse auction will be held Feb. 1 through Feb 10 on the Web site Publicsurplus.com.

3. Once again, selling off the prevention and hoping you have the money down the road for the cure.
Horse and dog patrols are excellent for outreach. But yeah, keep the cops in their cars and separate from the population. :eyes:

And no, I don't have an idea for balancing the budget, either. It's just a shame all around.

4. I have owned an ex-police horse and they are great.
It is tragic that this is happening to the city but if you live near by and want a horse you can't beat it. Perfectly trained, schooled every day, healthy and strong enough to carry a man and his equipment, these horses are wonderful.

Mine was a Thoroughbred/Morgan cross that I competed Cross Country with and you could ride him down the main street in town. He was so steady and well trained that he would trot the neighborhood kids around his turnout and stop if they started to fall.

I wish I could say I trained him to be the perfect horse but a very nice young officer did all of the work. He and his family came to visit regularly and feed him carrots for years.

5. They'll be a good buy;
conditioned to handle all kinds of environments calmly.

In my area, horses are going cheap, with some given for free, or turned loose on local blm to fend for themselves, because so many people can't afford to feed them anymore.

6. I'd take one of those dogs in a heartbeat
But they're very valuable and will likely either stay with their partners or go to another force.

But for sure I'd take one if I could.
