Study: Food bank use up 46 percent
CHICAGO, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- A staggering 46 percent more U.S. residents are receiving emergency aid from food banks than was the case in 2006, a study indicates.
Feeding America, the United States' largest domestic hunger relief organization, released its study Hunger in America 2010 Tuesday in Chicago.
It indicated that more than 37 million people, or one in eight Americans -- including 14 million children and nearly 3 million seniors -- are now receiving emergency food aid.
Feeding America said its study is the first to illustrate a significant connection between the recent economic downturn and an increased need for emergency food assistance. It said the percentage of food bank users suffering from hunger has significantly increased, with more than one in three food seekers experiencing "very low food security" -- or hunger -- representing a 54 percent jump from four years ago.
