What better way to drop a bomb against your competition than to make a surprise announcement in front of 30 million viewers?

1. I heard that he himself isn't nominated--best song and best
documentary. I understand that Gore is not one of the producers so if it wins he wouldn't actually accept the award, unless he is asked to do so.

20. The movie isn't remotely Oscar-worthy...
I agree with all the stuff in the movie - but it just wasn't that good.

Reminded me of one of those giant classes in college...

And - the movie was too political...like - is there any doubt that he will run...?

The movie said to me - "The Earth is getting hot and I'm running for president..."

YMMV...

22. These are the awards for Best Documentary it's already won:
Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards, Chicago Film Critics Association Awards, Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association Awards, Florida Film Critics Circle Awards, Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, National Board of Review, National Society of Film Critics Awards (Special Award, Non-Fiction Film), Online Film Critics Society Awards, Producers Guild of America Golden Laurel Awards (Stanley Kramer Award), San Francisco Film Critics Circle, Southeastern Film Critics Association Awards, and Washington DC Area Film Critics Association Awards.

So there are a few people who disagree with you.

2. He's not nominated for an Oscar.
Davis Guggenheim is nominated for Best Documentary Feature. Al Gore was the SUBJECT of the doc, he isn't nominated for shit. Anyway, who says it's going to win? Remember "Hoop Dreams?"

3. Just imagine if they cue the music to make him leave early.
No, he needs his own platform for something like that.

5. If the Documentary wins
I don't know that he'll be the one accepting the prize. That would be producer/filmmaker Davis Guggenheim. It would certainly put Al -- and the film -- in the news, though.

6. He should just stand at his table

and look humble and dignified. And announce when he publishes his new book, The Assault on Reason.

Why can't people just allow this good man to enjoy the success of this most important movie and be happy for the producers and the director who managed to bring this crisis to the consciousness of the world? How long do people have to beat their heads against a BRICK WALL to get people to understand the message of this movie? Will Antarctica and Greenland have to fall into the ocean before people wake the hell up? And for the one thousandth time, Al Gore is a man of decency and class who would not do such a tacky thing as to steal the spotlight away from the people who would actually be awarded this Oscar and the movie that is the culmination of his lifelong passion.

I hope he announces at least an exploratory committee before the Oscars.

10. I disagree.
He would never take away from the producers and crew. That moment belongs to all of them too.

No, if Al announces, he'll do it in another equally spectacular way that will be totally appropriate.

15. He is not a nominee. He can't win anything. I don't think he'll even
be there.

The film is ABOUT him and his fight against GW. It's not MADE BY HIM.

16. I read somewhere - other than DU, a real news story -
that he will be there. ;) But, yes, he surely will not announce there, as he will not be on the stage, anyway.

I don't care, I'm watching anyway. When is it again?

18. I Was Of That Belief Also
Then I realized it would not make sense for lots of reasons.

First, there is no guarantee the film will win the award. Second, it's not really his award, and even if he's allowed to say something at the awards show, the main focus should be on Mr. Guggenheim's achievement.

Finally, the awards are at the end of February, which is still much too early for Mr. Gore to make any sort of announcement regarding his intentions. He's much better off, from a political standpoint, of waiting another few months, until summer. A "stunt" like an announcement at the show, would certainly get press for awhile, but in the end, it will die out, and we'll still be left with lots of months until the primaries begin.

But having the movie win the award, and having him there at the podium, making a brief speech thanking those who made the film, will only help to increase his stature in the eyes of millions of voters. That's what they'll remember when they vote for Mr. Gore in 2008 to lead the country.

23. Bad idea.
If he does that, the thugs will take the opportunity to tear him apart for it, make no mistake.

Better to announce in a dignified and serious way somewhere else.
