Jim Webb for President!

I saw several signs endorsing Virginia's junior Senator during
the D.C. rally on Saturday.

Given all the positive publicity he's getting for his SOTU
response, any comment?

2008 is too soon. He's one to watch, though.

2012 would be a better fit for a Presidential campaign for Webb. Next year is just too soon.

25. We Need Him in the Senate.

I have this strange feeling that we are going to be
a divided government. Republican Pres. Democratic House
and Senate for the next several years.

We will be very smart to try to elect strong Senators and
Congressmen in great numbers.

The operative word strong. Think how good it makes you
feel to hear Webb not hesitate to say I am no longer
a Republican because of my concern for Social Justice Issues.
He is not hesitant to talk about the Wealth Gap, Trade
Policies, Corporate, Interests.

We will need lots of strong candidates.

2. I had reservations about Webb

of course, I knew he was a million times better than George Allen, but Webb seemed like a wildcard to me. I wasn't sure how he would play out, however, the guy looks like the real deal right now. Willing to stand up, fight and lead at a time when our country needs someone to do so.

7. I would describe Webb as a Republican with some sense;

He certainly knows the Necons for what they are. He would bring many Repubs over to vote for him. I think you will find him more conservative on social issues than what you might like. He has the credentials needed for the job. but if he has any skeletons in his closet, they will soon be out . I'm sure Rove is looking for his weak points as we speak. I'm more of a centrist myself and like what I have seen. I don't know how well he will be accepted by those further to the left than myself.

...and it doesn't get much farther left than that in Congress.
 I think American politics is realigning because of the war. 
The old labels don't fit anymore.

18. He also said some of the stuff that needs to be said about Corporate America

in his response to the SOTU speech. That was a good start for me, but I need to hear more about what he thinks the responsibilities of the group/nation are to the individual. Do they include Health Care, specifically. Is he afraid of the word "Socialism" in any and all of its variations?

Even if he turns out to bee too Conservative to be my President, he'd make some very find Cabinet member, such as Secretary of Defense.

I was actually very surprised and concerned.

"..What we have today is a specific situation, the Iraq war. And I do not oppose
the Iraq war specifically... Well, I think that the most important thing for a lot of people
who I am aligned with on this to make clear is that we're not opposed to any
specific plan, we're not opposed to the president's plan. What I object to is
the fact that there isn't a plan, that there hasn't been a plan for four
years..."

Then he goes on to say a bunch of really good stuff, criticizing sweetheart deals, promoting Dayton-like accords, but then ends with this:

"What we're doing is trying to define specifically how this could be a win."

I'm not sure he actually wants to withdraw, but still thinks we can 'win' this, in some strange way. I think he's got a real personal problem with being identified with the peacenik left which is making it tough for him to come down on the side of those advocating withdrawal.

11. Personally, I Loved His SOTU Response. I Think He'd Make A Great Candidate Someday.

Not sure if he's prepared enough for 2008, but if he ran hell, I'd support him. He seemed to be strong, genuine and dare I say it refreshing.

I looked at my wife and said "Damn, now that's someone I could picture as President". I was damn proud of him that night. He not only did a great job, but even won me over as to how good a Dem he is. I'm damn happy to have him, and think for certain someday we will see him leading this nation.

Let's give him time to evolve. You do realize that he first worked with the Reagan administration. I liked what he had to say in response the SOTU, but I am not going to endorse him for president.

We have lots of time, don't get caught up in the media telling you that you need pick your guy.

He will definitely be one of my big hopes for '12. I think it's jumping the gun a little bit to speculate about that now, though. Let's let him at least get his sea legs as a Senator.

23. Is Virginia a swing state?

I think that Mark Warner will be the VP nominee because he will have a greater chance of carrying Virginia than the relatively new Webb.

Although I like the way Webb talks, he's a new Democrat, and its a bit how I felt about Clark in 2004, that you got to earn your time in the party and can't expect to start at the top, the very top.

Webb will be a great Dem senator.
