Justice Dept official resigns over investigation connected with Abramoff
by Marisa Taylor and David Whitney
McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON - A senior Justice Department official has resigned after coming under scrutiny in the Department’s expanding investigation of convicted super-lobbyist Jack Abramoff, according to a Justice Department official with knowledge of the case.

Making the situation more awkward for the embattled Department, the official, Robert E. Coughlin II, was deputy chief of staff for the criminal division, which is overseeing the Department’s probe of Abramoff.

He stepped down effective April 6 as investigators in Coughlin’s own division ratcheted up their investigation of lobbyist Kevin Ring, Coughlin’s long-time friend and a key associate of Abramoff.

3. Ya know, when it's all said and done, we should
send Abramhoff flowers. How many would it take to fill a prison cell?

4. Stepping down is the same as pleading guilty with this crew
Or let's just say, those who are innocent usually don't vacate their post if they come under investigation.

5. Good grief. They need to change direction on all of
these investigations. Assume all Bushies and Repubs are corrupt and liars. Fire them all.

Then do an investigation looking for an honest Bushie. It will save time and money.

8. Here's the thing, though.
as any adminstration winds down, gasping its final wheezes, the rats all start leaving anyway, as they line up their next incarnations as lobbyists, board of directorships, or some other government teat-sucking job back "home".

The Abramoff affair is so convoluted, and far-reaching, that it may be years before any of these fringe players see the inside of a courtroom..if at all, so for now, many of them probably think that this is a great time to beat a path out of DC :)

10. And that's why we have to fight local corruption as much as federal
corruption.

Otherwise, it's like saving a victim from a vampire's bite, but not chasing the vampire back to his coffin.
