Are you celebrating Milton Friedman Day?
January 29, 2007 has been declared Milton Friedman Day. And look at what's on PBS. A freakin' hour-long tribute to... Milton Friedman, the godfather of the Chicago School of Economics.

"There are very few people over the generations who have ideas that are sufficiently original to materially alter the direction of civilization. Milton is one of those very few people." - Alan Greenspan

"I am a libertarian with a small l and a Republican with a capital R". - Milton Friedman

2. "There are very few people...
...over the generations who have ideas that are sufficiently original to materially alter the direction of civilization." Yeah, Alan. I've got another name that fits your criteria: Adolf Hitler. Or how about Uncle Joe Stalin.

Original ideas aren't necessarily good ones.

3. Despite his politics, he did make important contributions to the field of economics
Before Friedman the conventional wisdom was that monetary policy was not very effective. That is certainly not the case today. Also, I thought that it was funny and somewhat of a good idea when he suggested that the federal reserve be replaced by a computer.

But like most libertarian market worshipers, Friedman was either greedy or very naive. For better or worse, though, he did make significant contributions.
