I know it's not exactly what we want or expect, but...

I'm giving Brian a B+ because I think it's deserved!

9. I disagree that Canadians have less doctors available and still don't buy the long wait meme.

But other than that - not bad for a change.

10. Many U.S. Americans have long wait times, depending on their coverage.

Kaiser, for example.

15. Yeah, and with no coverage, they might have to wait until they can pay for it.
For most of us, that would be a long, long time.

12. The whole country has only 34 million people stretched over a very wide area...
There will naturally be areas with few doctors.

There probably ARE long waits, but in Philadelphia, we had to wait over 3 months just to get a ENT consult for my boy's tonsils...

13. Not long waits for emergency diagnostics or treatment ....
Edited on Fri Feb-26-10 02:48 PM by polly7
other things, yes, but not really any worse than down there. If a specialist isn't available immediately in my area my doctor will send me to another province and expenses can be claimed and reimbursed ..... coming from a VERY large family, I don't know of one of us that's had to wait for anything needed immediately. Each province was allocated so much Federal money to improve whatever their own system was needing most - here it was mostly equipment, Manitoba I believe it was not enough technicians. The wait times for non-emergent surgery (from articles I've read over the years) are no better or worse than down there. Yes, the rural areas are hard-pressed to find doctors that are willing to stay for too many years. They're overworked, underpaid and sometimes, just overwhelmed. They also don't get to practice a lot of the surgery they spent years learning and perfecting. We're lucky here as we have a husband and wife team in one community, and two very good doctors about 20 minutes in the other direction. Lots to work on and we always will have, but the wait times are mostly nowhere near what the anti-singlepayer people are saying.
