VANCOUVER - Hockey Canada apologized Thursday for an impromptu party the Olympic women's hockey team threw for itself on the Canada Hockey Place ice after winning the gold medal.

Canadian players, still wearing their uniforms and with gold medals draped around their necks, celebrated their victory by drinking champagne and beer at centre ice following a 2-0 win over the United States.

Provinces can set their own age limit as opposed to one federally mandated age. Many southeastern B.C. youth celebrate their 18th birthday by driving 'next door' to Alberta as soon as they can, stay overnight for safety reasons before returning home to B.C.

This is the Olympics, where a bit of decorum is expected. Not to mention that some of the team were underage. Nothing classy about drunken louts with cigars at center ice.

If this had been the US doing this, we would have been blasted, but since it is Canada it seems to be a minor controversy at most.

If they want to party, fine, take it back to the village.

The US Women's Hockey Team is an excellent one. Canada just had us outclassed. On one very upbeat note, Kerry Weiland of PALMER, ALASKA, played for the US and brought home the FIRST ALASKAN US OLYMPIC MEDAL EVER!!!

be rubbing it in. Our american women showed their sour faces yesterday and I felt bad for them but it showed bad sportsmenship. They should be happy to win any medal. They did their best and that is all we could ask of them. The canadian women played well on that day and they deserved to win.

his company is one of only two in the world capable of designing tracks for the Olympics. When you brought forward the point about the designer, it peaked my curiosity as to who, indeed, had designed this track so I did a search and found this article which I found very informational as to the how, why, etc.:

From his laboratory in Leipzig, Germany, this 71-year-old engineer found how to make cement tracks slick. He figured a way for concrete as wide as a man's hand to hold not just a four-man bobsled but a sophisticated network of steel tubes piping coolant down the icy tracks. Gurgel's inventions have made his engineering firm one of only two places in the world capable of designing tracks for winter Olympics.

But his most recent design, the Whistler luge track at the Vancouver Winter Olympics, proved to be the fastest ever, faster than he had thought it would be, with top speeds exceeding 130 kilometres an hour. After the death last Friday, at extraordinary speed, of the young Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili in a practice run, the track's design, and the decisions behind it, have come under scrutiny.

That luge (which exceeded IOC standards because of the higher walls) had had more than 5000 runs on it during the last two years. It was a tragic, horrible accident that imo could have been prevented with MUCH better planning of it, in particular not placing posts at such a fast turn (CRAZY) but yes, the officials certainly did apologize.
