1. Student admits leaving noose at UCSD
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/feb/26/noose-protest-ucsd/

SAN DIEGO — Campus police at the University of California San Diego are questioning a student who admitted she hung a noose on the seventh floor of the university library Thursday night.

The incident is the third racially charged episode on the campus in two weeks, and has spurred a new round of rallies.

"This is truly a dark day in the history of this university," Chancellor Marye Anne Fox told students gathered along Library Walk. "It's abhorrent and untenable."

The noose was found hanging from a bookcase of the Geisel Library at 10:30 p.m. Thursday, and the student called at 9 a.m. Friday to confess, according to vice chancellor Gary Mattews.

"It's someone who didn't think that leaving a noose was an issue," he said....

Bullshit. He knew what he was doing. More of that "oh, I didn't know it as offensive" or "I'm sorry if your offended" right wing shit.

22. That was the group who called the Black Student Union
"ungrateful n*****s" on UCSD student television, which poured gasoline on the fire. It is because of this group, KOALA, that all funds for student media have been suspended and that the University is now on the hot seat. Before, it was just an off-campus party and the University responded well but had no legal liability. KOALA changed all that with their shit.

12. This is why the founding fathers specified a voting age of 21
because most people outgrow that "poke a finger in the eye of respectability" phase by then. A teenager finds this stuff unbearably funny. Grownups know better.

Fortunately, most teenage punks are too apathetic to vote, anyway, so we might as well keep the age of eligibility where it is.

The idiot who was persuaded to hang this thing is going to get an education her tuition didn't guarantee. She obviously needs it.

I got drunk and high all the time, chased wild women, didn't know how to handle money and paid NO attention to my education.

But I knew shit like this was off the reservation. Being "18" isn't a excuse for this type of behavior. It's a excuse for losing your job at Subway not racism.

Student Party Prompts Anti-Racism School Campaign

Filed at 11:19 p.m. ET

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The University of California, San Diego has initiated a campus-wide campaign against racism in the wake of a student party that used a ghetto theme to mockingly commemorate Black History Month.

A school Web site outlines the ''Battle Hate'' campaign that aims to ensure that all students feel ''safe, supported and respected.'' A teach-in at the university Wednesday discussed the importance of mutual respect.

The off-campus party on President's Day outraged some of UCSD's black students, who comprise only 2 percent of the student population.

The party was condemned by the school and a fraternity. UCSD officials are investigating whether anyone can be disciplined.

21. It has fucking exploded.
I think the problem is that the UC system has its own dirty laundry-tenure going to white male professors and denied to minorities and women, for example. UCSD is a tinder box in that regard: the whole campus is white and Asian, and some of these Asians are foreign students. If I am on UCLA campus, I will see black students and Latino students and everyone else. I went down to visit my friend at UCSD and went several days without seeing a single black student; the blacks and Latinos I saw were staff: secretaries, facilities and maintenance, etc. It's appalling. I said to my friend that Prop 209 must have affected UCSD more than UCLA or other UCs, and he said that UCSD has always been like this.

Student hangs noose at San Diego campus library 2 weeks after racially tinged party

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/wire/sns-ap-us-black-history-mock-party,0,7754335.story

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A student at the University of California, San Diego admitted hanging a noose in the school library less than two weeks after an off-campus party mocking Black History Month ignited racial tensions, authorities said Friday.

The discovery prompted a rally at the school already roiling with resentment over perceived intolerance.

The noose was found dangling from a light fixture on the seventh floor of Geisel Library on Thursday night, authorities said. A University of California statement said a student admitted she and two other people were responsible. The statement did not identify the students or their race or include a motive.

UC and campus authorities did not indicate whether the students would be charged with a hate crime. Under state law, hanging a noose to terrorize is punishable by up to a year in jail.

"Whatever the intent of the authors of this act, it was a despicable expression of racial hatred, and we are outraged," the UC statement said. "It has no place in civilized society, and it will not be tolerated."

To blacks, a noose recalls the days of widespread racism and lynchings.....

where white students placed a noose in the campuses only shade tree.

Year in prison sounds about right.

The Koala site was really bad...even for a campus scandal sheet.

Anyone participating should also be expelled and blackballed from any UC campus. No refunds.

No place in this country for this sort of behavior.

44. Breaking: President and all UC chancellors just issued a statement
caveat...not sure if they are referring to the UCSD incidents, the UCBerkely riots or both.
--------------------------------------------------

Statement of UC President Mark G. Yudof, the Chancellors of the ten UC campuses, and the Chair and Vice Chair of the Universitywide Academic Senate
February 26, 2010

As leaders of the University of California, we are deeply disturbed by recent events at a few of our campuses. We condemn all acts of racism, intolerance and incivility. Regardless of how such offenses are rationalized, or what free speech rights they purport to express, the acts we have witnessed are unacceptable. The actions of these individuals reflect neither our principles nor our values, nor the sentiments of the University of California community. We will not allow the actions of a few to speak for this University. We denounce them.

Each of our campuses is committed to promoting and defending a learning environment that values and supports each student, faculty and staff member in an atmosphere that is open, civil, fair, caring and respectful. These values are enshrined in the "Principles of Community" each campus adheres to and that clearly outline our expectations for behavior on our campuses. We expect that all members of our university community, including our visitors, will be respectful of differing views, opinions, experiences, and background.

When violations occur, it is incumbent on us, as leaders and as stewards of free speech on our campuses, to push back. We have a responsibility to speak out against activities that promote intolerance or undermine civil dialogue. As always, the remedy for bad speech is good speech. For that reason, we call on all members of the UC community – students, faculty and staff – to affirm and defend the values of the University of California. We are speaking out and ask that you do the same whenever, wherever and however you confront behavior that violates the principles and values of this University.

UCSD
CAMPUS NOTICE
University of California, San Diego

OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR

February 26, 2010

ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UCSD
ALL STUDENTS AT UCSD

SUBJECT: Chancellor's Video Statement Regarding Recent Incidents on
Campus

University of California, San Diego Chancellor Marye Anne Fox has issued
a statement regarding recent hate- and bias-related incidents on campus.

To view the Chancellor's video statement, visit
http://battlehate.ucsd.edu.

A transcript of the Chancellor's video statement follows:

"I strongly condemn the offensive acts of hate and bias that have
occurred over the past days. It is deplorable that while our students,
faculty and staff work to heal the campus, a few misguided individuals
tried to divide it. We are feeling real pain, and we will take real
action. The safety of our students, faculty, and staff is my primary
concern.

"An individual has come forward and admitted responsibility for the
latest incident because of pressure from our UC San Diego community.
This underscores the fact that our university is banding together. We
will not tolerate hate on our campus, and all criminal acts will be
punished. These issues affect all members of our community. We will
not stand for racism and the toxic atmosphere it creates on our campus.

"I have personally met with students today and over the last several
days, and we are making significant changes based on the Black Student
Union's recommendations. I am extremely proud of our students and other
members of our campus community who have strongly and respectfully
expressed their outrage over these incidents. You have shown amazing
strength and I am proud of the moral character that has been
demonstrated through the rallies, forums and demands for change.

"I know this campus community has been deeply hurt. In order to heal
and rebuild, we need to stand together and stand strong for a safe,
peaceful and supportive campus for everyone.

"I pledge to you we will create a campus climate in which students will
know, each and every day, that this university respects them and their
communities."

49. Will students be expelled for hate speech or actions?
I want to know what constitutes a "criminal act," how it will be prosecuted, and what constitutes "punishment" by the University.

57. I wonder what section it was in - the article gives the floor and shelf,
but what call numbers was it near?

Also, I'd love to hear the student's explanation of why she thought it worth doing at all, if it was "not a big deal." I can think of exactly zero innocent explanations for having or leaving a noose on campus...

Dr. Seuss Birthday Party at UCSD is Cancelled
In light of recent events on the UC San Diego campus, the celebration planned for March 2 at noon to mark Dr. Seuss's birthday has been cancelled. While this tribute to Theodor Seuss Geisel, one of the university's most beloved icons, is eagerly looked forward to every year, we feel that cancelling it this year is the best course to take given the current campus climate. We regret any inconvenience this may cause.

62. Interesting - no way to tell, but that collection would certainly include
some bigot-worthy targets. I was more than a bit suspecting that it was the African-American History section, but I'd guess that language and linguistics would have a significant anthro and ethnic studies presence.

It will be interesting to see what the motivation was, and how the university responds to this...

Students Peacefully Leave UC Chancellor's Office
by THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

text sizeAAASAN DIEGO February 26, 2010, 10:03 pm ET
An hours-long student takeover of the chancellor's office at the University of California, San Diego, is over.

Dozens of students stormed the office earlier Friday, angry over several recent racially charged campus incidents.

They occupied the office for several hours before leaving peacefully at sundown, about the same time that leaders of the university's Black Student Union ended talks with administrators in a nearby conference room. The students presented a list of 32 demands, including more funding for African-American classes and campus activities.

Student leaders told hundreds of supporters outside the chancellor's office that they were unhappy with the administration's response and would resume talks with school officials on Monday morning.

University spokesman Jeff Gattas says no arrests were made and no property was damaged during the takeover.....

.....SAN DIEGO (AP) — Anger boiled over on the University of California San Diego campus Friday, where students took over the chancellor's office to protest the hanging of a noose in a campus library.

Students wearing red handkerchiefs over their faces blocked the doors to Chancellor Marye Anne Fox's offices for hours, while more students inside chanted "Real pain, real change." The students remained inside the office several hours later.

The noose found dangling from a light fixture on the seventh floor of Geisel Library on Thursday night was the latest in a string of racially charged incidents in the university community, authorities said Friday. Less than two weeks ago, an off-campus party mocking Black History Month ignited racial tensions.

A University of California statement said a student admitted she and two other people were responsible. The statement did not identify the students or their race or include a motive.......

the Leadership Institute/FreedomWorks' Campus Reform are all in an outrage, claiming their First Amendment protections are being infringed upon after "The funding for UC San Diego's 33 student media groups -- including The California Review -- was abruptly frozen last week...", or something of that nature. I received an email 'alert' from Campus Reform (I subscribed a while back just to see what they are up to), that stated the following:

As The California Review has documented in blog posts and videos, Gupta wants to cut financial support for just one student group, The Koala. He's said as much in public.

The Koala staff put themselves in the center of campus controversy last week. News of a controversial, racially charged party had spread to students. In response, The Koala, billed as a student humor group, broadcast an offensive "news" segment about the party on student television.

But UC San Diego is a public university and must abide by First Amendment protections. That means neither UC San Diego nor its student government can cut funding to a group based on its content or viewpoint, because the funding is drawn from mandatory student fees.

So in an effort to target The Koala within the boundaries of the law, Gupta and the UC San Diego administration have effectively shut down all 33 student media groups that rely on student fees. And Gupta refuses to reinstate funding until a special student government committee has passed rules regarding acceptable content for student media outlets.

Members of the The California Review and other concerned students have effectively argued that now is the time for more debate and discussion, not less, on their campus. Campus reformer Alec Weisman, editor-in-chief of The California Review, has been a tireless blogger and videographer this week, as he tries to spread news of what's happening at UC San Diego through his blog and CampusReform.org.

And while campus debate continues, Alec and other campus reformers are already taking action. Tonight UC San Diego reformers will attend a Campus Election Workshop to learn how to win their upcoming student government elections. The stakes are high.
