The Coffee Party
Edited on Fri Feb-26-10 01:30 PM by Mark D.
Source: Washington Post

Finally, a place for us. Progressives who aren't always lockstep in supporting Democrats, and see the need for a return to its progressive roots. But not just that...also saying we too are fed up with how things are going. But we are going to talk about a way to fix the problems vs. shouting down others and all of the other 'tea party' issues. I'm going to try to get involved with this. I think this could be the unifying voice on the left that we need. Mainly since it can bridge a gap between the 'fed up with this prez' folks and those who keep saying 'give him more time'. I'm not here to say either of you are wrong. I am saying this may bridge the gap on the left, and maybe even with the right.

3. Not Bad
Edited on Fri Feb-26-10 01:59 PM by Mark D.
But I'm afraid we'd lose folks who'd consider the use of 'klatch' to be 'elitist' since they don't know what it means. Sarcasm aside, really, part of the intentional irony in the name is the idea the left are out of touch elitists, and the damned Rovian design that intellect means elitist. WE are the ones who stand up and really represent the 'little guy'.

6. coffee is more patriotic than tea.
Remember that the founding fathers, and mothers, started drinking coffee after the Boston Tea Party to boycott English Tea.
How about the Coffee Break Party? Katch may be elitist, but everyone is ready for a coffee break...lol. Has a nice proletariat ring to it too. Take a break and smell the coffee. What could be more American than that?

7. Do the Tea Partiers really know what the Tea Party (Boston) was about?
In this article it would be nice to see the actual difference reiterated. As far as I know, and correct me if I'm wrong, the Boston Tea Party was the citizens of this country rebelling against being taxed by someone else's Government. By a Government in which they didn't have representation.

Now one could argue from either side, that we don't have representation. When you are a Dem in Nebraska, you have the Repugs, and Ben Nelson. Not really a progressive's idea of representing one's beliefs. But they can be voted in, or out, by the citizens of Nebraska.

The Tea Baggers, as we like to call them, seem to be rebelling against Taxation by their OWN government. Although, the true members who aren't toothless inbred high school drop outs, actually get that the Government is bought and paid for and their taxes are thus waisted, or used on useless pork, or that those with more income get all the rewards (as their own Nashville Tea Bagger Convention basically shoved in their faces).

Though it may be semantics, it just seems the Tea Party movement is not really a good term to use.

I like the idea of the Coffee Party movement. Progressive, but tolerant of other ideas, and common sense based. I'd imagine they would support Single Payer, because Corporatist Insurers are killing the people of this country that don't have the means(despite what the GOP harps), which I'd say the Tea Baggers would support on that logic but doesn't because government is "bad". The Coffee Party would, however, leave things that work to the Free Market, but would realize that there would be as much Government regulation as needed to prevent fraud and the abuse of it's citizens. People first. The Government is there to help.

Of course all discrimination would not be tolerated. DADT is gone. Same Sex marriage is in. You're hate of someone else, someone that doesn't change your life except in your head, is not reason to deny rights.

If you don't like it, vote. Don't fly your plane into a building. Don't shoot your teacher or boss. Don't' tell other countries what to say or think or live. Otherwise, cash out, buy your guns, hire Black Water and move to Somalia or Nigeria, where there is apparently no Government looking after anyone's rights.

Why's it so hard. Millions of years of Evolution and we're still doing this shit. Or if you will, dropped on Earth by God, and still doing this shit to our fellow humans (and non-humans), that too, we're dropped on Earth, by God.

Yes, Coffee Party! Wake up people!

10. Well, actually it was people rebelling against their OWN government which levied a
(small) tax on tea to help pay for the huge expense of British colonial military protections, including paying for the previous war against the French (and Indians)
That the colonials had no real representation in Parliament over those taxes was a main sticking point.
Not much different then the reaction Obama would get if he raised taxes to help pay for Bush's evil wars...
And who is our rabble-rouser similar to Sam Adams?

21. And then there was Washington, DC
Where the people meet who represent everyone in the US except the people of Washington, DC!

The people of Washington have no representation in the Senate and only a non-voting representative in the House. They are the real people of today who have taxation without representation.

Don't forget DC!

And I like the idea a latte. Coffee Houses were where enlightenment thinkers discussed new political ideas, where avant guarde poets presented their new poems, where revolutionaries plotted revolution. They've been considered so radical that the establishment has always tried to shut 'em down. And cool music gets played there.

AND, as an added benefit, "coffee party" doesn't have any unfortunate sexual connotations like teabagging (does it?). Start up a branch here and put it into play! I'm ready to join the Coffee Party. When we start marching, we'll be so caffeinated, we'll last through the night. Best of all, the name makes "teabagging" sound even stupider (didn't think that was possible, did ya?) Win-Win!

Like In Amsterdam ;) I'll have a double chocolate brownie with mine! :smoke:

But seriously,
I have been actually behind a progressive answer to the 2 party lockup we have right now for some time. Can we just vote out ALL incumbents and really blow them away? Who would we vote IN...?

Perhaps NON political figures would be a good place to start.
Those who have actually done work on the ground to help and change things...maybe even public figures from different arenas. There are entertainers, scholars, writers, etc who may not be "lawyers" but they know how to help people. Let the 'legal aides' write the details of the actual legislation, we need some fresh blood in there to think OUT of the box - especially when it comes to debate and ideas!!!
