The Hill wasn't the only outlet live-blogging the healthcare summit yesterday. Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) provided his analysis in a Daily Kos thread, and managed to get in at least one shot at John Boehner.

"I think Leader Boehner is particuarlly livid about the tanning bed tax," Weiner wrote of the bronze-skinned Republican. "Surprised he hasn't mentioned it."

The Senate health bill would in fact levy a new tax on tanning bed's to help pay for expanded coverage.

5. The House bill has a tax

on so-called plastic surgery. While it's easy to figure that nose jobs and tummy tucks would be taxed, it is less clear in other areas.

What if your doctor demanded a ten percent surcharge on your Lasik, your son's circumcision, your sex reassignment surgery, or your lap-band operation?

I'm guessing legitimate reconstructive surgery would not be taxed, but "vanity" surgery might be. Hard to say where sex reassignment or lap-band would fall in there. Probably depends on if you can get a doctor to say it's medically necessary or not.

Since the 10% tax would be enforced by them, they'd probably turn to the body of law that has been established for deciding what is tax deductible for medical purposes. At this point in time, they're disallowing sex reassignment surgery.

I'm not up on where they are with other plastic surgeries, but if the House bill goes through, I'm sure there will be a heavy amount of study into Tax Court cases on the subject by CPA firms that serve doctors.
