9. Actually, I'm a big fan of natural disasters for just that reason...

they are "uncaring."

They remind us of our place in nature. They don't honor prayers or wishes or human conventions.

For all of our arrogance, natural processes continue on without our input. Where we do have input, as in the case of pollution and overfishing, we ignore natural processes at our peril.

In the case of human-caused "natural" disasters, such as overfishing and climate change, our decisions will have real consequences without any regard for how humans feel about it.

We are an arrogant species.
