Seven Years to 1,000 Posts
Edited on Fri Feb-26-10 06:19 PM by democraticinsurgent
I'd like to dedicate this, my 1,000th post to Skinner, EarlG and the rest of the team here for providing this wonderful forum.

No, I don't post a lot. But I've been here since 2003. In fact, I might have set the record for the slowest path to 1,000 posts, who knows. Yet, I am on here every day, with few exceptions. This is my primary news source. I know if anything happens in the world that I need to know about, it will probably show up here on a timely basis. I feel like no matter how I react to the events of the day, I can come here and know that many of you feel the same way. In fact, that keeps me from posting as much as i might. So many of you speak for me, that I don't feel the need to post very often.

It's been the roughest 7 years of my life, as the housing bubble (bought at the top, sold at the bottom), unemployment, age discrimination, a failed retail business, skyrocketing health insurance and college tuition costs, and out of control credit card companies have all played havoc with my life. As I write this I'm in the early stages of going through bankruptcy, something I put off until it absolutely had to be done. It's a strange fall from my former middle class life, which seems like a distant memory now. Like so many of you, poverty is front and center in my life and I wish I were better equipped to deal with it.

I'm actively working to reduce my consumption of everything (except information), and that is easier to do when you have no disposable income. I hope at the back end of the bankruptcy I'm able to embrace a simpler, greener, and easier life.

Through all this, I've been fortunate to have Democratic Underground to anchor my day.

So again, thanks to all of you who make this happen. All of 155,373 of you. ;-)

1. No way....
Edited on Fri Feb-26-10 06:24 PM by Uben
...I came here in 2001 and did not make it to 1000 till 2008. You're not alone. I have picked it up considerably since then, but may drop back off. I thought I was the only one who took that long, but there are probably a lot who have been here that long who still don't have near a thousand posts.

edit:If you eliminated my posts cussing about GWB, I probably still wouldn't have a thousand!

2. All the best.
You've had some tough breaks. Hope the pendulum swings the other way, and soon.

3. I'm right there with you...congrats!
And keep us posted on your experiences. It helps to sound off sometimes.

I knew bankruptcy was in my future, so I took the hit early. I bit the bullet back in 2003 when I saw the writing on the wall. I swore off all cards and, as of this year, have finally restored my credit. Get a good lawyer or financial adviser. You'll be fine, even better for cleansing your books of the mess our sorry economy has made.

Peace

4. You sound like a man with a tremendous amount of strength.
Keep in mind that you've "somehow" managed to get through all those crises and that this is just one more... and you'll get through this one too. You'll have to make adjustments, but I sense that you'll be able to do it. Hang in there. Congratulations on your 1000th post (it took me 5 years).

5. And I thought I was the cunctator!
Edited on Fri Feb-26-10 06:53 PM by RedCloud
On rewrite: Oops I just assumed the dictionary had a more historical flavor to it...

Here's what I meant:

I hope things go better for you soon. Hang in there.

7. You're a strong one for what you have survived so far.
Whatever it is you want and need, think about it.
Don't thing about the how at all, just about the specifics of what you want and need.
Think and think and think.

And as surely as day follows night, that which you have thought about will be drawn into your life - be it answers, friendships, health, abundance, or love.

It's the law of the Universe.

I wish you the very best. And I will be thinking about that as one of my wishes.

:)

8. Looks like your e-bay store is still up???
For all the true audiophilles who are into vinyl, check it out:

http://stores.ebay.com/Missing-Link-Records

If this is still your online store, I can send the link to our audio society - we are approx. 500 members strong.

:hi:

9. Thanks for all the kind words
And somehow I do take comfort in knowing that i'm not the only longtimer who doesn't post much. ;-)

I'm doing ok, really. I shared that stuff about my difficulties not so much to get sympathy, but more because I see so many others here who have gone through similar, and much worse stuff. And most of us find ways to get through it, and hopefully stronger.

Regarding the eBay store: it's a goner as of 3/31. Thanks for thinking of that. But eBay's greedfest continues and they essentially killed the store concept with their latest restructuring. Only the big sellers will be able to afford a store in the new eBay. (katanalori, do we know each other?)

I'm moving stuff to Bonanzle and maybe a couple of other places, not completely sure yet. Plus I will do auctions, those are still worthwhile.

Cheers all!

Rick

14. I don't think we know each other Rick........
I am in L.A. and an officer of the L.A. Orange County Audio Society.
There is a resurgence of vinyl these days, and I am dragging out the albums that have been in the garage for 20+ years.

Good luck in all of your future endeavors.

12. I understand completely
I don't know quite when I first joined, maybe 2002 or 2003, and I have a lot less than 1,000 posts. But the things I have learned from reading posts on DU have changed my life! And I used to get on for the Breaking News updates all the time, like 5-6 times a day! Lately "only" get on 3 times a day, but I love DU. I would be lost without it. Thanks all you who do post and keep me informed, I appreciate it!
