Oklahoma House Bill Bans (Women's) Egg Sales
http://www.blueoklahoma.org/diary/1057/house-bill-bans-egg-sales

Why do state legislators continue to want to dictate what women do with their bodies when it comes to reproduction issues?

Why do they continue to crusade against science?

On Thursday, the Oklahoma House passed a bill, sponsored by state Rep. Rebecca Hamilton, an Oklahoma City Democrat, which would make it illegal for state fertility clinics to compensate women for donating eggs. Under the bill, women could still donate eggs. They just couldn't be paid.

To make a point, state Rep. Ryan Kiesel, a Seminole Democrat, offered an amendment to the bill that would stop men from selling sperm, but it was defeated and the bill easily passed.

3. You think it is okay for poor women to sell their eggs
to be used by the rich?

This "libertarian" garbage makes me sick. People's bodies shouldn't be bought and sold. Period.

But it isn't okay to legislate AWAY the rights of women to control their own bodies.

That is not a libertarian statement. It is my belief that human rights must always be expanded by any legislation, not curtailed.

It is not the business of state governments what women/people want to do with their bodies unless it is of a public health issue. I mean if you knew you had TB and purposely ignore health protocols... well, maybe then the state has an interest in you body. But that should be about all the state has an interest in. What is between a woman and her conscience cannot be regulated. It's none of the state's business.

21. Better their eggs than their bodies, don't ya think?
I can sell my plasma and my sperm - and have sold my plasma innumerable times during some lean years - so why shouldn't women have that same option? It's not like anyone is forcing them to do it (as I understand it, it's a somewhat painful procedure so it is not like anyone is doing it lightly).

24. Sorry but women should have domain over their bodies, 100%.
And that includes selling her eggs, her vagina, whatever -- if it is her choice to do so, so be it.

26. Yes, I do. Why not?
We're not talking about lungs and livers here. Women have lots of eggs, and donating doesn't deprive them of anything. In many ways, it's no different than giving up blood.

4. Kiesel's response it probably better
than trying to frame it as "telling women what to do with their bodies".

I can't sell my blood (though the Red Cross charges the hospital hundreds for it)... you can't sell a kidney. It makes sense that you can't sell an egg. The real gap is that somehow you can sell sperm.

Do I hear $6.00 per swimmer? Do I hear $7? C'mon ladies and gents. These are proven upstream swimmers GUARANTEED! to produce the most manly of male offspring.

Going, going...

Eggs. Meh. Not so much.

Sorry. I have to make fun of some of this crap of my head will explode. My teeth already itch so bad I'm in danger of brushing the enamel off.

Why yes, yes they can, because we all know women are to weak minded to have control over their own bodies!

11. I don't understand this
Let's say a woman is in extreme poverty, to the point where she will die. Selling her eggs will allow her to live. Why would that be wrong?

Oh nevermind, we live in a culture of death. Pro life my ass.

12. I'm not a lawyer
and although I realize that common sense or reason are often neglected in the lawmaking process, it seems that this law wouldn't stand up to scrutiny in the judicial system. I'd expect it to get overturned at some point if & when it gets challenged.

Because invasive surgery is required, I'm inclined to give them the benefit of (a very, very) small doubt.

before harvesting eggs. Is it harmful or something?

I doubt it's the invasiveness or the expense. Obviously the cost is covered if doctors performing this procedure can afford to pay the women for their eggs.

Are there any other differences between selling eggs vs. selling sperm?

edit: It's the possible risks. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/15/health/15cons.html?_r=1

28. Selling eggs is not a sexual act
I presume you meant gender, but you might want to consider who proposed this legislation - 'cause she's female and a democrat. I'm not in favor of selling eggs or sperm, same way I'm not in favor of trading in organs, or treating donations off eggs/sperm as gift income, potentially subject to taxes.
