Convicted and Escaped Murderer Caught after Drunk Driving in Police Station Parking Lot

Jean-Claude Demey, 51, spent eight years on Belgium's death row after being convicted of murdering a bank manager in 1988.

His sentence was commuted to life imprisonment when Belgium abolished the death sentence in 1996.


Then two years later he escaped from prison and has been at large for the past 12 years. But he is now back behind bars after he and two other men took a wrong turning while driving through Reims, in eastern France, on Monday.

They tried to avoid roadworks caused by the construction of a new tram system, and found themselves blocked in the car park of the city's main police station.
