Republicans Back Perry in Texas

Rick Perry, already Texas’ longest-serving governor, has survived primary challenges from a popular senator and an insurgent tea party candidate. Debra Medina had hoped to spoil the Republican race, but the tea partyer (whom we recently called out) was able to grab only about 17 percent of the vote.

After trailing Hutchison in initial polls in 2009, Perry surged to a commanding lead by mobilizing his party’s most conservative members and harnessing disenchantment with Washington-style politics and President Barack Obama.

“I think the message is pretty clear—conservatism has never been stronger than it is today,” Perry told reporters on Tuesday night in Driftwood.

3. And now comes the general election

We'll see what happens. At this moment I have good feelings about Bill White. He's campaigning in my part of the state - something no Democratic governor candidate has done since I can remember. That's good news to this Panhandle girl.

I no longer live in Texas but still remember all those "This is Bush Country" signs that used to poison the scenic landscape on long drives. :-(

The voting totals from my area, for this primary, were fairly depressing. The Democratic turnout numbers are back down to where they were during the Dubya years.

I'm hoping that there was simply more primary enthusiasm for the republicans in part of the state.

Mr. White needs to keep courting the rural areas because while Texas may be home to 3 of the 10 most populous cities in the US, there's a whole lotta rural here and ignoring that fact is a fool's game.

I was talking about your allusion to secession which is not going to happen even though some of the idiot bubbas here like to lord it around. If they only allowed the 5 major cities to vote, we'd be a blue blue state. I hope we can rally the Dems in Nov. to counteract the vast rural red areas of the state.

Actually, Arnie seems to be starting to see the light (somewhat) after your state's economy fell apart around him.

My paycheck is smaller because of his furloughs, and that means we eat cheap pasta at the tail end of the month. But big business and his republican friends eat cake a la Marie Antoinette and keep their tax cuts to boot. He has cut programs for needy children and battered women's shelters are gone and he's cut funding for education. But his rich friends are just fine, thank God! :sarcasm:

then the one with the most votes should get it, even if they fall short of 51%. What are you going to do, keep holding the same vote over and over again? They may do some recounts before it gets certified.

2 on the ballot, but neither got 50%+1 thanks to write-in votes for Mickey Mouse. No shit.

16. I worked the primaries yesterday..Dems-40 voted,Rep-400 voted

the one thing I noticed...
Th Republicans...almost without fail,had the most dour looks on their faces...angry,condescending looks-like their faces would crack if they smiled.
The Democrats would smile and carry on small talk ... like 2 universes.We joked and enjoyed ourselves at the Democratic table(yes,we were at 2 separate tables),while the Republicans sat stiffly at theirs.I found it very sad in a way.

18. the only time I saw R's laugh at the polls

was the first time I voted in Texas. After scanning the ballot I asked rather loudly "Where the hell are all the Democrats?".

While the entire roomed burst out laughing the two prunes at the table felt their buttholes pucker ever more tightly.

I wonder if that was something the Rs insisted on, since during early voting, everyone went to the same table. I felt sorry for the 1 girl at the R table though. The Dems had more poll workers & brought snacks & decorations for their table. She sat alone & forlorn at her undecorated one...at least the Dems shared their goodies with her. :)
