I tuned into today's hearing just in time to hear that quotation, and to my shame I could not identify the speaker, but I am so happy we are revisiting repealing the ludicrous "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. (If anyone watches this archived hearing and knows who this speaker was, I would appreciate knowing.)
The point is: I am glad the condescending attitude on this issue is dissipating.
We should feel fortunate that there are so many people willing to fight and die, to put their lives on the line, for this country. (Although, I can't say I am thrilled by our choices lately about where to risk these precious lives.)
It looks to me like "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is on its way out, and I am only sorry to the GLBT community that it has taken so long.
Good riddance to that prehistoric policy.
You can watch this hearing yourself here. It just concluded and has not been posted yet, but will be shortly.
