The Senate confirmed William Conley Thursday to fill a vacancy on the U.S. District Court for Wisconsin's Western District. Conley, a Madison attorney, is now a partner at Foley & Lardner, where he has worked for 25 years. The vote on his confirmation was 99-0.

Conley was one of two nominees being considered to serve as a federal judge in the state's Western district. The other, former state Supreme Court justice Louis Butler, is still pending Senate confirmation.

Conley received a law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School and earned a bachelor's degree in economics and political science from the University of Wisconsin. Before the vote, Sen. Herb Kohl urged his colleagues to support the nomination, saying Conley has a "keen understanding of the court, as well as the fairness and impartiality that the administration of justice requires."

Conley replaces Judge Barbara Crabb, who is retiring after 30 years.
