Muslim civil rights group seeks HUD probe of religious discrimination

WASHINGTON, March 4 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A prominent national Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization today called on the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to investigate allegations that a Texas apartment complex had a policy of refusing to rent to Muslims or segregating them in buildings away from other tenants.

The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) called on HUD's Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity to determine whether StoneBridge at Bear Creek apartment complex in Euless, Texas, violated federal fair housing laws.

According to an investigative media report, former leasing agents for the complex say Muslims, whom managers referred to as "curry people," were routinely refused apartments even when there were vacancies. The leasing agents said they were told by their supervisors that they could only rent to Muslims if they were all kept in two buildings of the 21-building complex.

3. funny thing, in Dallas we refer to Euless as "Euseless"

It's a bedroom community that serves an area referred to as "mid cities", which includes Dallas' technology park (las colinas), and Grand Prairie, which is the mecca of collections call centers.

Dallas has a huge Indo-Pak population, but applications are mostly governed by the TRA (Texas Renters Association) which most specifically does NOT have cultural or religious or even living-arrangement information on it, other than the number of people and names of people residing at the applied address.

That means the leasing agents are looking at last names or seeing the applicants in person before determining their "muslimness" - which is thankfully illegal even in redneck suburbs.

Euless may be "cheaper" to live in but it's the red part of the metroplex between Dallas and Ft. Worth - and it shows.
