"Pootsy, The Flatulent Rainbow Unicorn".

6. No, I'm just citing another "bogus symbol of what progressives want"
as per your original post.
You included "Che", why not "Fidel"?

9. Actually, Fidel doesn't get cited nearly as often as Che
And Fidel had the misfortune to grow old and stop being mythic.

Now, he just seems like somebody you'd see slipping into Denny's to get the "early bird special".

10. I don't know about that
The right-wingers like to point to Castro because he is still alive and even the younger RWers know about him, while Che is mostly a forgotten memory from the '60s, I think.

11. Well, nobody wears Fidel t-shirts.
meanwhile, Che's image is still everywhere.

(my all-time favorite comment on that was the "New Yorker" cartoon in which Che is seen wearing a Bart Simpson t-shirt.

but how many people actually know anything about the guy?

16. Depends.
People see Che in different ways.

Some, as an advocate of the armed struggle(and, falsely, as the advocate of armed struggle as the ONLY possible revolutionary political tactic that could be used anywhere...which was NOT Che's position. In cases where democratic possibilities for radical change existed(such as Chile)he supported those who worked for radical socialism by democratic means(like Salvador Allende, with whom he shared a mutual respect).

Some smugly dismiss him as a "murderer". He did kill people, but(whether you agreed with that or not)he usually did have a valid rationale(such as maintaining battlefield discipline and preventing looting, banditry and rape amongst the revolutionary forces, as well as making sure that those who would have organized the violent overthrow of the Revolution and the bloodsoaked restoration of capitalism, as had just occurred in Guatemala)would not get the chance to inflict such misery. There' no evidence that Che executed anyone who was actually innocent of horrible crimes. If it had been me, I'd like to think I wouldn't have executed them, but that's me speaking from North American comfort and privelege. Who's to say what any of us would have done if we'd actually BEEN in that situation?

Some see Che as a symbol of the idea of liberation, of the idea of resistance to exploitation, imperialism and misery, and would never themselves use his tactics(tactics that, in the present situation, don't actually make any sense anywhere).

And to some, he's just the cool-looking dude on their surfboard.

Everyone gets the Che they want, it seems.

Could somebody Photoshop that image?
