Waterproofing protest signs?

Already posted this in the Activist group, but thought I'd put it here to for greater potential response.

Does anyone know of a way to waterproof the signs you use at protests?

We have some wonderful signs from both of the protests in Jan. and Mar. My husband today said that if it wasn't for the possibility of rain, he would like to put our "Republicans Against the War" sign in our front yard - a main back road to a major highway. (Yes, he is a republican - he hates * as much as we do and can't wait for the next march. Anyone know when it will be??)

The local repuke chairman (or whatever) lives up the street from us and our house is right across the street from a polling place. So anything we put in our yard gets alot of exposure! We love to irritate this mostly conservative community!

1. Can you get ahold of a laminating machine?

If that fails, you could always get a large plastic placard and use indelible ink.

You should be able to find bulk plastic sheeting by the yard somewhere...

2. This is a little pricey, but...

I've gone to Kinko's with protest signs and had them mounted on foam-core board with a laminated finish.

Costs a bit more, but the signs are re-usable.

4. Ask a farmer

Heavy cardboard and barn paint does the trick. A farmer I do peace marches with does the best signs. He did an Impeach sign for me that is absolutely beautiful. Barn paint doesn't run. If you need any more advice, pm me. My friend is an expert.

Also if the rich Republican in your district has discarded signs around, pick these up, paint them white (with barn paint, of course) and repaint your peace and impeachment message.

7. Clear contact shelf paper works in a pinch.

8. Shingled application of clear packing tape

or contact paper.

Make it so that the water will run off. For instance, if the tape is thinner than the sign, wrap the bottom first. Then, wrap one row higher, slightly overlapping the first bottom tape. Do that all the way up, and the water should run off, not in or through the tape.

Alternatively, you can use use Krylon satin finish spray. I've waterproofed home-made outdoor signs this way and it works well enough for protest signs and such ... but not for permanent outdoor signs.

Get it at a home crafts or artists supply store.

13. Polyurethane? Corrugated Plastic?

The campaign signs that are printed on corrugated plastic last a long time, even in bad weather. Try a local sign store for some. Other than that, try spraying some polyurethane clear-coat over them. That's what we're doing for the signs for the Maryland Faerie Festival.
