viral email: "Refuse new coins because 'In God We Trust" is gone.
Edited on Fri Mar-05-10 12:49 PM by Liberal_in_LA
Received this today: :eyes:

It has begun...Refuse new coins!

REFUSE NEW COINS

This simple action will make a strong statement.

Please help do this.. Refuse to accept these when they are handed to you.

I received one from the Post Office as change and I asked for a dollar bill instead.

The lady just smiled and said 'way to go' , so she had read this e -mail.

Please help out..our world is in enough trouble without this too!!!!!

U.SGovernment to Release New Dollar Coins

You guessed it
'IN GOD WE TRUST' IS GONE!!!
If ever there was a reason to boycott something, THIS IS IT!!!!

DO NOT ACCEPT THE NEW DOLLAR COINS AS CHANGE

Together we can force them out of circulation..

36. Myth & Busted.
http://www.ustreas.gov/education/faq/currency/legal-tender.shtml

This statute means that all United States money as identified above are a valid and legal offer of payment for debts when tendered to a creditor. There is, however, no Federal statute mandating that a private business, a person or an organization must accept currency or coins as for payment for goods and/or services. Private businesses are free to develop their own policies on whether or not to accept cash unless there is a State law which says otherwise. For example, a bus line may prohibit payment of fares in pennies or dollar bills. In addition, movie theaters, convenience stores and gas stations may refuse to accept large denomination currency (usually notes above $20) as a matter of policy.

I mean think about it. If you were required to accept all US currency then every single soda machine/snack machine/payphone is operating illegally. They don't accept pennies, and most don't accept bill larger than a dollar. Also on the other extreme at closing the person buying your house could pull up with a dump truck worth of pennies as payment.

Still the Boycott is stupid. I like the dollar coins for more for me. :)

Edited on Tue Mar-09-10 09:12 AM by Statistical
First it was this (starting in late 1999)

Now it is this

I do agree the Susan B Anthony coins were stupid. I mean what was the mint thinking. However they are out of active circulation which means if a bank receives one they are returned to Treasury to be melted down.

16. I happen to have 3 and they all have "In God We Trust" on them.
Two from 2009, one with Polk and one with Tyler, have "In God We Trust" on the face side.
I have another with Jackson from 2008 and it has it on the edge.

These coins are slightly larger than a quarter. Put a quarter on one and just the edge of the dollar coin shows. That's still a little too close if you are trying to feel the coin in your pocket.

I think these coins are not widely used. I have a USA Today motor route as well as some racks and very rarely do I ever get a dollar coin. It would be handy for me if they were used more then I would have to deal with tons of quarters.

23. The government finally got tired of this shit
The current issue of these coins has the president's name above his likeness, and "In God We Trust xx President xxxx-xxxx" below it.

Because it's so hard to look at the edge. Which is why they should change the edge to read "Quit Trusting Stupid Emails * Snopes Is Your Friend."

Here's what I want to know: Grover Cleveland was the 22nd and 24th presidents. Does he get TWO coins?

33. It's partly true:
"...at least 50,000 of them, by one estimate were erroneously struck without the motto "In God We Trust" and found their way into the batch of 300 million issued on February 15, 2007.

It doesn't take much to tick off those idiots. And BTW "In God We Trust" did not become the official U.S.national motto until after the passage of an Act of Congress in 1956.It made the appearance of "In God We Trust" mandatory on all coins and paper currency of the United States.

39. Church & State is an expression with no legal authority.
The restriction is:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

How does the term "In God we trust" equal "making a low respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof".

It is possible for one to not like the term "In God We Trust" and advocate its removal without reaching to it being unconstitutional.
Many things the govt decides to do or not do are because it simply makes sense rather than a Constitutional restriction.

"In God We Trust" first appeared on the two and five-cent pieces introduced in 1864.
