I am John Brady. I head the Burbank Human Relations Council. The BHRC is one of the oldest civil rights organizations in Los Angeles County. We have always stood for building an American culture based on equality, justice, respect, and common human decency toward all who live here.

Our allies and, at times, adversaries have been the City, the police, the School Board, and anyone in power that has influence in our community.

Until recently I have shied away from calling myself a civil rights leader. That was until I got on the wrong side of some people in power. They tried to mash me up pretty good. I lost some territory but came out the hero. Someone I did not know referred to me as "someone who has stellar credentials fighting racism". I still get teary eyed about that. I didn't know people I didn't know...noticed.

So I am a civil rights leader now. A minor league civil rights leader... but I can suit up now. :patriot:

178. County Civil Service Commissioner for the past year, though officially I am retired...

At various times I was a secretary, an admin assistant, went back to grad school and got a PhD in a subject everyone else thinks is blissfully useless (Mythological Studies) which is the hazard of doing any doctoral program, was an County Affirmative Action Commissioner for 12 years, various other volunteer stuff that's interesting and (I hope) worthwhile ...

The Commissioner gigs are political appointments via the County Board of Supervisors. The AAC was completely gratis and sadly, that commission no longer exists, although I think it did good work in its 30 years.

CSC turns out to have a stipend per meeting and per hearing, which is pleasant. It goes into my bank account with my teensy pension from the university, and my Social Security check that I started getting last fall at age 62.

Mostly I tend to discount the effects that health had on my willingness to leave the 40-hour work week as early as I did (about 20 years ago), and thereafter stick to part-time and volunteer work, but once in awhile waking up feeling like a shipwreck somehow brings it all back... and reminds me why I am so damn grateful that I don't have to get up at 6 am every day and haul ass into an office.

I love what I'm doing now in my supposed retirement.
