Karl Rove sets the record straight -- sort of

By Dana Milbank
Sunday, March 7, 2010

As a White House reporter during the Bush presidency, I often worried that I wasn't getting the whole story. Now, Karl Rove has finally given it to me.

His new book, "Courage and Consequence," promises to "pull back the curtain on my journey to the White House and my years there." What he divulges nearly made me choke on a pretzel.

That business about President George W. Bush misleading the nation about Iraq? Didn't happen. "Did Bush lie us into war? Absolutely not," Rove writes.

Condoning torture? Wrong! "The president never authorized torture. He did just the opposite."

Foot-dragging on global warming? Au contraire. "He was aggressive and smart on this front."

You thought Bush was responsible for turning a budget surplus into a record deficit and nearly doubling the national debt? That he was in charge when the economy plunged into the worst collapse since the Great Depression? Guess again. Spending was "far below average" under Bush, who led the nation through "the longest period of economic growth since President Reagan."

Even Bush's televised claim that the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Michael "Brownie" Brown was doing a "heckuva" job after Hurricane Katrina wasn't what our lying ears told us it was. "Bush was responding to compliments others had offered to Brown."

Heckuva job, Architect. In fact, these new disclosures call for a correction of some of my past reporting:

CORRECTION

Every article about George W. Bush ever written by Dana Milbank was wrong. The Post regrets the error.

1. Thankfully others documented
all the lies of the Bush regime. Rove can go Cheney himself.

4. One wonders why he was banned in one month and back on air the very next month
It gets one to thinking that maybe the reason he wasn't on air was a private spat, not an ethical matter.

3. This Has To Be A Joke. Right?!?
.

If this is not satire, irony or the writer trying to be facetious, then one should expect the next thing published by a 'Mr Washington DC Village "Insider"' Dana Milbank would be his letter of resignation. Unless one is a stenographer, this is quite an admission from a professional working at the Washington Post.

Shall we have a pool on how long before Mr Milbank resigns? (Ha ha., Ya; not going to happen, ha ha.)

10. This is obviously meant to be sarcastic
It's snark. I'm anything but a Millbank fan, and I know he would never actually admit, seriously, that he didn't do his job.

11. I don't know, I kind of took it as a 'mea culpa' because he's snarkily
repeating what Rove said vs. reality.

14. My reading
Milbank, upon reading Rove's pack of lies being sold as a book, takes issue with practically everything Rove says. However, for the sake of his column, Milbank pretends it's all true, and therefore issues the blanket "correction." This makes it seem like Milbank was all over the Bush administration for eight years, calling out the lies and arduously setting the record straight, access and insider cocktail parties be damned.

In reality, Milbank was far more stenographer than reporter, filing reports faithful to every lie coming out of the Bush administration, and only very occasionally raising a journalistic eyebrow on some of the more egregious lies. Milbank's column can thus be summarized as a load of hooey.
