It also looked like it was shot through a Brach's Butterscotch Drop.

Much as the story was important, I thought it was a complete botching. Coppola directed the Godfather Part 2, one of the greatest movies ever made, but he certainly has dropped a couple of stinkers along the way.

You're not alone, though; many lefties just LOVE that picture. I'm probably harder on it than I should because I value the story and history so much that seeing it thrown away with a ham-fisted, overblown cymbalism (sic) is like watching Spielberg or Stone at their worst.

Not only is it a very important indictment of the corruption of the West but it also has the best ROLLER SKATING scene ever filmed.

The reason Heaven's Gate failed are many but at the base of it the movie depicts a real life even where the president of the USA and many of the powerful families of Wyoming had a hand in killing US citizens WHOLESALE simply because they were a poor and ethnic.

Almost all the families and companies who did the killing are still running the state of Wyoming today.

86. I wouldn't go THAT far, but it's REALLY good...

Cimino's an odd duck, and he threw away his career on that picture. It was full-on artistic suicide.

Somehow he's loved to death for a gorgeous-looking piece of absolute crap like "The Deer Hunter", but a fine movie like this was never given a chance. That's the way it goes when the media rumblings about being out of control and over budget take control.

Having said all that, though, it's a bit full of itself as a movie with overblown imagery for the sheer artistic bravado of it and a sweeping bombast that is hard to not wrench the viewer from the moment. Even so, it's a great story, the pacing and grandeur of it are quite fitting and compelling, and the performances are fabulous. It's beautifully shot and well edited and it really doesn't deserve the crap it's gotten. Compare it side to side with something treacly like "The English Patient", and one can see the unfairness that can come into play.

Read "Final Cut" if you haven't; it's one of the best books ever written about the film business.

If it's any comfort, serious film lovers have stuck by and come around about this picture, and it will not be totally swept under the carpet of history.

The film also contains a prescient, ominous 1980 Dick Cheney doppelganger.

It's a noir thriller set in late-1970s Southern California. Very political.
