The Purging of the Party.

This crap is not new. It is not from what we now call the r/w. If anything, it comes from those who have always, currently do, and will always, support the status quo, benefit from the status quo, and as such, will continue to promote the status quo and help to perpetuate "the existing institutions". That is not party specific; never has been regardless of what you'd like to believe. Nor is it new for members of the press to do much the same.

The Purging of the Party.

     Hear what the New-York correspondent of the London Times says of the ultimate consequences of the election of General Pierce:
     "One of the not distant results, probably, will be the withdrawal, or banishment of the whole tribe of fanatics from the Democratic ranks--1, the Abolitionists; 2, the Fillibusters and Pirates; 3, the Women's Rights Dreamers; 4, the Bloomers, et id genus omne. These disturbers of society, whose only object has been to tear down existing institutions, have grown to be more numerous than might be supposed. They had attached themselves generally to disappointed Democratic leaders, who could gain notoriety only by the advocacy of ultraism. All these excrescences will now be lopped off."

     "The Womens' Rights Dreamers" must march also. Well, there were few of them that had votes, and there are many things done in the Wigwam that would be as well done in the absence of ladies.
     The Bloomers, et id omne genus! Mrs. B---- and Mrs. G---- and Mrs. S---- then are among the excluded! And as the separation of families can hardly be tolerated in this latitude, there must go with them some very eloquent Democratic gentlemen, and some very meek and harmless voters. The young women are driven out,--what a cozy time the old women that remain will have! Moreover some of these exiles will wonder much at their position as defined by this Correspondent of the Times. Some of them will open their eyes on learning that they are reckoned among the victors, that they were part and parcel of the Democratic Party.
     We learn a great deal in the London Times. Pity the steamers do not come oftener. We need its lucid expositions of the passages in our daily history. It is pleasant to be sure that we are right in our notions of things--but if the Times' correspondent is right, what awkward blunderers the rest of mankind are!

alternate parties.

Those who've had control in the intervening years have made sure that is less and less likely to happen.

I was surprised the original writer of the piece didn't mention the Abolitionists in his(? more than likely his) rebuttal. The author went right past them to the "Fillibusters and Pirates."

As you can tell, I've spent a lot of time viewing them online, in addition to microfiche and newspaper morgues.
