They are free to promote vaccine avoidance. We always DID make more money off of "fire engine" medicine, and deathly ill animals with totally preventable stuff like distemper and feline leukemia. Why do you think vets are the professionals whose incomes have done the WORST job over the past 4-5 decades of keeping up with inflation? That coincides quite nicely with the huge increase in vaccination rates for pets.

37. a scratch is not usually considered a rabies exposure

b/c rabies is transmitted via infected saliva. in theory, an animal could have saliva on their claws, but as rabies is an enveloped virus, it does not live long outside an animal. my guess is, that if a scratching dog was being held, it was probably state mandated.

bites definitely carry a mandated quarantine. the protocol varies by state, but almost all have a REQUIREMENT for a biting dog with questionable vaccine history to be quarantined. some states as long as 90 days in a state-approved kennel (not the owner's house).

The severity of her seizures dropped significantly after I stopped having her vaccinated every year.

Coincidence? Maybe, or maybe not. Regardless, less seizures is good.

On edit: Stopping vaccinations was my vet's idea.

in unvaccinated animals is FAR greater than the risk of very rare vaccine complications such as fibrosarcoma in cats. I still vaccinate my kitties annually. I'll take my chances with the tiny risk of cancer because to get a potentially fatal and highly preventable infectious disease is simply inexcusible, and IMHO unforgivable.

My vet was vaccinating my pets every year until just recently. Now she does it every other year. One set of vaccines one year and the other the next year. The thing is that the vaccines are good for THREE years. I brought my cats from Toronto to CT this fall, all of them with international health certificates which all say that they are due for vaccines in August 2010 when in fact the vaccines are good until August 2011. The vet here says that even though her record will show that my cats are good for another year, she will have to vaccinate them this year if I take them back in August or later. The actual vaccination records show the sticker from the vaccine with 2011 printed on it but what my vet has written on the certificate will have precedence. It is just so that she will get to make a home visit every year I am sure - a business decision - which I would have her do in any case for exam. I mean I will call her and ask for an amended certificate and she will do it, but I am going to be a little more conscious of needlessly overlapping vaccines. It's just not good practice. Vet here says she is not a believer in over-vaccination and I agree.

Some vaccines need to be done annually, and others at different intervals. Sometimes science learns more about the best way to do it, as we go on. However, there is nothing that I've seen that indicates any harm done by vaccines for animals, to date.

My Vet called me an abusive owner for discontinuing Frontline and threatened to call the ASPCA.

Since i have been a fund raiser for the ASPCA in the past i let her call them.


She had to move out of the state to practice veterinary medicine after that. If she comes back I have no shortage of people who will make her life hell.
