Americans' Global Warming Concerns Continue to Drop
PRINCETON, NJ -- Gallup's annual update on Americans' attitudes toward the environment shows a public that over the last two years has become less worried about the threat of global warming, less convinced that its effects are already happening, and more likely to believe that scientists themselves are uncertain about its occurrence. In response to one key question, 48% of Americans now believe that the seriousness of global warming is generally exaggerated, up from 41% in 2009 and 31% in 1997, when Gallup first asked the question.

For example, the percentage of Americans who now say reports of global warming are generally exaggerated is by a significant margin the highest such reading in the 13-year history of asking the question. In 1997, 31% said global warming's effects had been exaggerated; last year, 41% said the same, and this year the number is 48%.

Now, is there any doubt re: Gallup's right wing nuttery?

1. I don't know whether it's Gallup or gullible Americans.

4. Well, actually...

Gallup has a long history of manipulating statistics to reinforce conservative propaganda. There was a discussion on this here earlier today about this actually. For example, they always over-stated Bush's popularity, at least between 2001 - 2004.

5. Have you got any evidence that Gallup is manipulating public opinion on GW?
Or is that just some unsupported claim that you believe because you wish to believe it, like so many global warming deniers?

6. They certainly do- and it's well known (and sometimes laughed at in academia)

I particularly like the poll where 75% or so believe that guardian angles are watching over them!

Gallup's one of quite a few outfits whose purpose more often than not is to manipulate public opnion not reflect it.

8. That doesn't surprise me
There's been a fairly intense assault on climate scientists and a rather cold winter (for many places in America), so the results are to be reasonably expected from a populace that is largely ignorant of science. One hot summer will turn those numbers around real quick.

9. Dumb and dumber.
That's us the American people. I guess it snowed in the southern hemisphere during our winter. That is the only way you could prove that we did not have global warming.

10. Hardly a surprise!
It is abundantly obvious that the gurus on Madison Avenue have perfected their art of mind control through advertising. The extremist/corporatist right-wing has used this to devestating effect in regard to a host of issues in America over the last few decades. Everything from getting 70+% of Americans to believe that Saddam was behind 9/11 to shielding Wall Street executives from jail to denying Evolution and Global Warming the power of deliberate deception and lying is all around us. This is also another glaring example of the power of Rush Limbaugh and his army of media clones. It is quite literally impossible to wake anywhere in America without being subjected to some bit of the right-wing propaganda machine. The legions of right wing propaganda pimps on radio, TV, cable and in print are quite literally everywhere. It is these folks that drive these numbers. It is almost a daily mantra on right wing hate radio that Global Warming is fiction, the science is not settled and those advocating that the phenomena is real are merely communists trying to destroy America.

11. Have they always done this poll in the winter months?
Not that it should matter, but it does...
