Holland, Mich., to announce $300M battery plant

Korean battery-maker LG Chem and its U.S. subsidiary Compact Power on Friday are expected to officially announce plans to make battery cells for electric vehicles, including the Chevrolet Volt, in Holland in western Michigan, two people familiar with the plans said today.

The plant is expected to create 400 jobs and 15 million to 20 million battery cells a year, the Free Press has reported.

LG Chem’s $300 million lithium-ion battery plant is one of four projects planned or underway in Michigan that are using federal grants meant to jump-start advanced battery production in the U.S.

The vast majority of advanced battery cells are made in Japan, Korea and China.
