Second Tropical Cyclone Ever Forms in South Atlantic

The second ever tropical cyclone to form in the South Atlantic has been spotted about 180 miles off the coast of Brazil.

Tropical cyclones typically don't form in the Southern Atlantic because the waters are usually too cool.

However, forecasters at the Naval Research Laboratory noted on Tuesday that a low pressure system off the coast of Brazil appeared to have tropical storm-force winds. The storm has been dubbed Tropical Storm 90Q.

The first known South Atlantic tropical cyclone (the collective name for tropical storms, hurricanes and typhoons) was seen in 2004 and called "Catarina."

"The only other tropical cyclone known to have occurred in the Southern Atlantic Ocean developed in March, 2004," said Hal Pierce, meteorologist on the TRMM satellite team at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "That's when a hurricane called "Catarina" made landfall on March 28, 2004 near the town of Torres in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina (thus, the storm's name). It was the first "hurricane" ever observed by satellite in the south Atlantic."

1. I've got a funny feeling about this summer. We've had some

very strange weather events here in NE this winter. Things that never really happen here. Storms like the huge wind and rain storm with hurricane force winds that hit us 2 weeks ago.

I think I really ought to buy a Generator. We lost a furnace several years ago because of a power failure.

Now if I can figure out a way of hooking it up and hiding it outside, I'll buy one in a flash. I think I'll go to Lowe's and ask if they have ann expert to explain the whole generator thing to me.
The best they can seem to do at my local Home Depot is point you to the object in question. I will Google the How-To later. I have received bad advice from the HD people before. I'll need real tutoring on this project.

I just need to keep the pump running. The cellar does not flood, the water comes up through the sump well. Water table stuff.

I read yesterday that some meteorologist predicts a worse and more violent hurricane season this year. More violent storms, more of them to travel up the coast toward NE.

4. As an electrician may I make a suggestion and hire an electrician.

You should have a manual transfer switch between the generator and your panel. That will require a permit (not expensive) and a little knowledge. Electricity is very unforgiving.

5. You know what? I think I'll see if I can find an electrician.

There is no way any of that makes sense to me. Thank you for letting me know. I thought you just had to run some kind of a line from the sump pump to the generator(outside and portable) and push a button for the thing to start.


All I need would be a small one just to keep up with the h2o as it fills the sump well.

6. That's a little different. If your pump plugs into an outlet a small generator is all you need.

All small generators come with outlets on the side. A good extension cord will do the trick. Never run a generator in an enclosed space. CO2 buildup will kill you.

8. definitely hire an electrician.

My neighbor wired his generator into his house after Gustav and destroyed a few electronics as a result. Not to mention that an improper job can backfeed and kill linemen or set your house on fire.

Fortunately everything I need simply requires an extension cord.

Another thing to consider is carbon monoxide. Make sure that your generator is in an well ventilated area and is not sitting next to a window or door. Everytime there is a hurricane or storm, there is always some dumbass that drags a generator inside a garage or home and dies as a result.

I really do hope that the season is mild, but I'm already making preparations just in case.

7. Beach water in Rio was always ice cold, even in the hottest of the hottest summers.
