Former Solicitor General Ted Olson will represent the Republican National Committee (RNC) in an expected campaign finance case before the Supreme Court, the RNC announced Friday.
Olson, a former solicitor general for President George W. Bush who is regarded as one of the top Supreme Court litigators, signed onto an RNC lawsuit to challenge rules on national party committees' raising and spending of soft money.
“I am thrilled that Ted Olson will be joining our team,” RNC Chairman Michael Steele said in a statement. “Ted is second to none when it comes to winning important cases in the Supreme Court, and
I am bringing him on board because I am fully committed to restoring our constitutional rights and leveling the political playing field. We refuse to take a back seat to the likes of George Soros, MoveOn.org, Hollywood, and big labor.”Retaining Olson puts the RNC in an interesting position on other issues, however.
Although he's considered a consummate conservative Olson has joined with another high-profile Democratic attorney, David Boies, to litigate a case in federal court in California challenging the constitutionality of bans on same-sex marriage.
The RNC's 2008 official party platform calls for a preservation of "traditional marriage" between one man and one woman.
