Only on Fox: Easy Application Exam? No Drug Testing? Come Work for the U.S. Census
KANSAS CITY - Advertising for jobs with the 2010 Census has some taxpayers questioning just who the government is trying to hire to go door-to-door, as job applicants can essentially fail a qualification test multiple times, and drug users are apparently welcome to come work for the government.

"Thugs," said taxpayer Angie Borges, when asked who the government seems to be recruiting for the 1,500 open positions. "Sorry, people that are just not worthy of having that job."

Applicants for Census positions take a 28 question multiple-choice test, in which they only have to answer 10 correctly to pass and qualify for a job that pays $15 an hour. But if that proves too difficult, applicants can retake the test as many times as necessary to get 10 answers correct.

According to advertising for the positions, the Census wants applicants to know that there is also no drug testing for the jobs.

"You can take the test over and over and over again and fail multiple times until you pass it," said Borges. "If you pass it, no drug testing required. Who is that going to appeal to?"

1. Well, if "Angie Borges" is unhappy, we had better re-evaluate the whole process.
Obviously, everyone in every government job should pass a drug test. Except Congresspeople. Or governors. Or school board members.

The things people will whine about!

5. And if Angie doesn't want some drug addicted census employee to knock on her door,

all she has to do is complete the census form and send it in. Duh

2. I love that they refer to "taxpayer Angie Borges"
As in, "decent, law-abiding citizen Angie Borges."

Ms. Borges should relax; the $15/hour is an averaged figure, varying substantially from region to region. In addition, the testing venues are somewhat limited, so that while you're welcome to take the test repeatedly, you might not have another opportunity to take it at a convenient location. For that matter, the job's only slated to last about six weeks, so all of those drug abusing slackers will have to find other means of dishonest employment in a month and a half.

7. that's such an odd word
"Taxpayer."

I'd like to meet someone who is not a taxpayer -- someone who has managed to live in the US without ever paying a penny of money to the government.

You're right; it's just a code word for "the right kind of person."

3. A job going door to door filling out forms. How could anyone not be "worthy" of that job?

And why would you waste money to drug test someone with that job?

6. those of us who only make $7.25 an hour and are drug tested
probably expect higher standards for a $15 an hour job. Then again, they must be saving hundreds of thousands of dollars by not drug testing a bunch of temp hires.

4. Too funny
My staunchly Republican 76 year old retired father works for the census, mainly because after 8 years of Bush rule he can no longer afford to be retired. Not that he understands that correlation, but it's funny to me that he proudly works for the census while the people whose blather he listens to degrade him for it. (incidentally, he worked for the 2000 census too, simply because he wanted to be involved with it).

8. Apparently, the test is not that easy
A friend of mine took it, we're part-time workers together, and he wanted to make more money to pay off his bills. He's not a Rhodes scholar, but he was intelligent enough to take the tests that the both of us passed to work where we do, about two-thirds of the people who apply fail that test.

And he speaks fluent Spanish, they need folks like him for this job, he's familiar with all the dialects used by Spanish-speakers in this area. I'm glad that he's got the opportunity to take the test again.
